Any opinions on hiking with trail running shoes in late July, early August? Vasque Velosity shoes have a molded plastic base plate to cushion the impact of rocks... Any thoughts?

Have you tried searching the board for "footwear?" You'll find people hike Mt. Whitney in a wide variety of shoes... Also, you didn't mention the weight of your pack, if you've ever been on this trail, or if you normally hike in trail running shoes.

I hiked in May with trail running shoes, they did great in the snow (staying dry I mean) and on the rocks and would highly recommend them. My feet felt great.
