Last year, I rolled my ankle no more than fifty feet from the car after a one day trip up Shasta. I was tired and careless.

This year, I lucked out and found these Raichle All-degree Lite GTX on sale for summer trips. My wife has had a pair and these have been great for her because she has gotten zero blisters.

I bring these boots up because they seem to have a similar structure to the air cast built in. I have been more careful after the last fall, but these summer boots definitely support my ankle from rolling better than my previous boots.

That is an excellent reference. The theraband exercises are also good. That ankle taping diagram is exactly the same as one in a taping book I have. I like to use more stirups than that taping diagram shows but that is an excellent base technique for wraping ankles. People can play around with that as a foundation and develope a protocol and taping that works for them.

Take up ice hockey! Your ankles will thank you for it.

Or how about this: Strengthening up footballer's ankles

Well as someone who has broken both ankles (one of them three times) and sprained my left ankle 23 times (football was a B#*ch), can I say "good luck"..

Just kidding.. no but seriously, the best thing I did was take it easy on them and use ankle weights (but strapped to my foot near my toes). You then sit with your legs off the ground and rotate your feet in circles or drawing the alphabet with your toes. This will build strength and give you that support you need.

I have also used ace wraps or ankle braces. I hope this helps!

I printed out your diagram Dave, and will take it with me tomorrow on our yearly MT. Charleston Potluck hike here in Vegas. I'll tape mt ankles at the summit before I descend. I'll let everybody know how it works. If it works, you won't hear me swearing next weekend on the Whitney Main Trail. Thanks everybody, great info and links.

Good luck with your taping and one piece of advice about taping......a small strip of moleskin on the achilles and one on the front of the ankle(where the ankle curves) will prevent the tape from rubbing. I have done the taping with and without these protective strips and it will work either way. A 1 inch by 3 inch piece right on the achilles tendon and one on the front of the ankle I find works well. Good luck and have fun.

And one more tip: shave the legs! That adhesive really pulls hair when you remove the tape.

The taping worked great today!!! I'm cured, well, fixed. Just got back from a hike, and not once did my right ankle roll over. I didn't do the best taping job on my left, that rolled a couple of times. I was amazed how great it actually worked. At times I could feel the pulling on the tape when I stepped wrong. I did bring some non-stick gauze pads for the achilles tendon area which worked fine, but I didn't get to shave the area's that the tape touched, I don't need to shave them now. OUCH!!!

Tape will be the first thing I pack for Whitney next weekend.

Thanks again everybody, this board is awesome!
