I see there are almost always walk-up permits left for the taking - what I couldn't find a clear answer on is whether the left over permits can be picked up for a day of hike? I have no problem leaving at 10 or 11 am. I'm shooting for a 3 hr summit. Although I imagine if those are available, they'd be available at 8 am when the center opens? I can't be up there by Friday at 11, and I'd like not to have to do it on Sunday, then drive back afterward!

Yes, you can get a permit at 8 am if there still is unused permit space.

I have six permits for Saturday the 21st, but am only using 2 of them. Is there something I can do to release the extras now, or will they not be released until I pick up the two I will be using?

You can call the Wilderness Permit number and release those that you are sure you won't need. They add those back into the pool of available permits, so others can call in and get a reservation.

It is really helpful if you do this, because you can be sure there are people calling in and inquiring about what is available.

In fact, if you add SeaDweller to your group, you are responsible for him. But if you coordinate with him here and by phone, you can call in and release your extras, and he can then call in immediately afterwards, and pick up one of them.
