My first post - I really like this website and have read many of the recommendations and advice - much appreciated.

I have an overnight permit for 24 & 25 June for two persons, but am looking to swap with someone for a later time in the week. (We are in Mammoth acclimating) Ideally Thurs and Friday. Not sure of the legalities through the permit Office but they seem very reasonable.

If I cannot swap, We will still use the 24 & 25th. Look for a middle aged man being led by a teenage daughter smile Her first, my second ascent.

The weather forecast looks promising, but would appreciate any updates as the time gets closer.

See you on the trails!

Bill

several other posts on this forum indicate that permits are non-transferable. I suspect if the Rangers examine your permit and find out that your name is not the one on the permit then you get in big doodoo. frown

Bill, look at the unused permits page. Currently, mid-week they are averaging 20 overnight permits going unused every day. So just show up whenever you want to, and pick one up. (The earliest they become available is 2 PM the day before you start the hike.)

Thanks Steve, That is great data!!
I call daily to see if there is a cancellation next week that I could pick up. The dilemna is that if I pass on my current permit to bet on the come that one will be available for Thurs, if one is not available - then I am out of luck! If only I were a betting man.

Al, I was asking for volunteers so that I could work the swap (or they might remember to cancel instead of simply not picking it up) through the permit office to preclude any appearance of impropriety. Any thing else would be sending the wrong message to my daughter WRT wilderness respect and usage - but thanks.

Bill
