Just heard that the Clovis fire has Lone Pine under some pretty heavy smoke. Can someone update me on the conditions at the Portal? I have no idea how far the fire is from the Portal - Is there any risk of closure?

Thanks.

I can't answer your question, but they are talking about the fire on the "What happened to the weather" post on this forum. Sounds like it is in Sequoya, which is on the other side of Whitney but really don't know.

You might mean Clover Fire. Here is the site information http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1283/

I've been following the Clover fire daily, as it has caused problems on the PCT, including intermittant closures.

It is a LONG way away from Whitney (30? 50? miles), and can't see it becoming an issue.

Hi, From the top of Mt Whitney on Sunday 6/22, I barely noticed the Clover Fire far to the south. It was a slpendid day in the Whitney area. Hope the fine weather hangs on. Jim

I don't know what the source was, but on June 23-26 2008, the 395 valley was so smoky that the mountains were barely visible from the highway.

The fire is still burning a little bit, on the Owens Valley side of the Sierra crest, near Haiwee Reservoir, so it's a ways from Lone Pine. Check this satellite photo and you can see that the rest of the State is pretty well covered with smoke, and the Owens Valley is not bad by comparison - whoopie... way better than it was last weekend! All depends on which way the wind blows during the day, and then the smoke settles down at night, but then clears up a bit as the day goes on, unless you're downwind.
