What are some of the records for the Mt Whitney Main Trail?

P.S. My friends and I were the guys sleeping on the summit last Sunday with the space blankets after an excruciating single day hike!! Tough but an awesome experience!!

I ran in to one guy on a day hike about a mile from the portal. It was 3am and I asked him quiting already? He said he started at 3 am the previous day. That has got to be the record for the slowest time 24-25 hours for a continuous day hike.

Fastest day hike on MT has got to be Galen Rowell. In Anatoli Boukreev's book the climb Galen was quoted of saying he did Whitney in 3 and 1/2 hours. I don't know if thats the MT or Moutaineer route but that's damn good...

Doug probably knows.

I'd bet it's under three hours round trip for the trail. The Mountaineer's route is shorter. On Hans Florine's webpage an unsubstantiated time of 2:15 (car to car) is listed for the MR.

There are some times listed here for the "Whitney Challenge", whatever that is.

I have seen on the site here of guys doing the hike barefoot, the guy and girl who hiked naked, and I heard of a guy who carried someone on his back all the way to the top!

We did our day hike on sunday and heard from other hikers that a couple did it naked on the day before as well. they said it was for the summer solstice or something.

From the "Going Lightweight" thread...

Actually it is true. We were resting slightly off trail when a young couple walked by kind of apologizing for being naked. The lady said something about it being "national naked hiking day." He had on a daypack and she actually was wearing a small scarf, in addition to their hats and shoes.

It was quite shocking. Since neither of them had a tan, I doubt they started from trail camp that way. By the time we caught up to them at the summit they had their clothes back on. I still wonder just how long it would take to get a full body sunburn at that elevations.....ouch all over.

With a little help from photoshop

I hope that couple had on SPF 100+ for the sunburn they'll get!
