So... a couple more questions for those of you who frequent the MWT....

Mom and I are looking at spending a couple of nights at Trail Camp by the lake and I have some questions regarding this...

1. Is there fishing allowed at the lake? If so.. what permits (CA License or such) are required?

2. If fishing is allowed, aside from packing out guts and fishheads, is it appropriate to move WELL away from the camp area and bury remains?

3. Fly fishing is the method of choice in my family.. does anyone know what kind of fly a late July fish might find tempting?

Thanks again for any info!
~Chris

The lake by Trail Camp is more of a pond. I don't think there are fish in there. Sounds like you should take the 10 minute detour over to Consultation lake. That is a deep lake with fish, fishing license required.

How far off MWT is Consultation Lake? And what are the regs there?

SoCalGirl:

Along with Team +@ti2d, I'll be up on the Main Trail for a dayhike on July 17th. Depending on the weather conditions (i.e., lack of thunderboomers), and hike-time permitting, I hope to be able to hike over and drop a cast or two or fifty into Consultation Lake on our way down. I've never fished Consultation, but it looks like great water. After getting some input from folks familiar with the area, I plan to bring a couple of black and a couple of olive Woolly Buggers, as well as a "flashy" streamer or two, all in the #8-14 size. Instead of an intermediate line to get the fly down to the 10-15 foot level, I'll likely use a weighted floating line or a bead-head or cone-head streamer. I also plan to bring a couple #20 PT's, a few #20-22 zebras and tigers, and, of course, a light selection of dries in case there's any surface action. Hope this helps.

Tight lines,

A weighted streamer followed by a small, but not necessarily tiny nymph can be a good combo. The streamer gets the flies down and acts as an attractor. The nymph 18" to 24" back provides a less intimidating morsel for the less aggressive fish.

The high lakes and streams don't provide fish the size you can find in the Owens Valley streams in the fall, like this 24" hen brown:

but the fish in the high altitudes are usually not very concerned about pattern as much as presentation.

You guys are awesome!!!

BruinDave~ Would you please drop a line here when you get back and let me know how the fishing was up on Consultation? You should be getting back just before Mom and I leave (I think... we're driving up there the night of the 25th).

Dale~ I think thats the fish that was laughing at my Dad on their last trip up in that area!!!! : )

Thanks again guys,
Keep me posted please,
~Chris
