San Diego resident Ric DeVan, set out from Bishop Pass toward Mt Goode on the 3rd of July. He signed the summit register of Mt. Goode on July 4th and has not been seen since. He was supposed to traverse the ridge and and meet his wife and daughter at Treasue Lakes on the 4th of July.

Search and Rescue has been looking for him, 40 people and one helicopter. They will go until Friday, after that it is up to family and friends to continue to search. The family needs class 1 type rescuers to help.

There is realistic hope that he is surviving as he is an experienced climber and hiker. He was carrying a pack, with a tent.

I am hopeful that anyone who can help will call Mike Sotomayor at (619) 966-9712 or (760) 216-3151.

Thank you,

Hi Scott,

Yes, he is. Ruben Cantu (Badwater veteran, LB50 race director) is his stepfather.

Ruben is looking for volunteers to go up to Bishop and help.

I am sorry but I have no news. My wife and I just spent a couple of days in Lone Pine as that is where we go when we need some down time. Without knowing this story, we went up to South Lake on Thursday for a day hike and wondered what all the search and rescue people were doing there. Several runners came past us and now I wished I would have asked them for news.

Yesterday, when we left Lone Pine, I ran into Ben Jones who told me more of the story. He had not been advised of anything new as of yesterday. He was heading for Furnace Creek today, I believe, as the race starts Monday. I wish I had known as I could have joined the runners.

We also saw Doug and got a tour of the hostel. Looks great.

Still no word on this yet. I keep checking hoping for some good news. In AZ otherwise I would try and help search.

Hello All,
I just spoke with Shannon, Ric's sister. The search team has found what they suspect is Ric's backpack. They are taking it down the mountain as I write to be identified by Vickie, Ric's wife. If it is in fact Ric's it does not bode well. It was found on a class 2 trail near Mt. Goode that gave way to a poosible 400 ft drop. We will know more in the morning when the area near the find can be searched more throughly. It's not impossible and miracles do happen but it has been 12 days and 400 ft is a long way.

Continue to pray and keep your fingers crossed.

Seems odd that an experianced mountaineer would take off his backpack and then fall off a cliff.?.

Come on Ric...were pullin for ya!

I was thinking the same thing last night when I read that post... but thought maybe he had taken it off to get something out of it and slipped? I dont know that area at all and have no idea about the whole classification of climbing scale that is used.. However, I've been under the assumption that a 2 isn't that bad?

On behalf of Ric's co-workers, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for your help, suggestions, prayers, and thoughts during this very difficult time. As you can tell, Ric was a beloved and respected friend who contributed so much to us and to the community of San Diego. He is, and will be, sorely missed.

I have no words...

Thanks to all for the prayers and support. I heard Ric's wife is relieved to know where he is and that they may be able to recover his body. They are going in with dogs to search.

I have been following this tragic story here on the these boards.

I'm just a weekend warrior type hiker, but enjoy spending time with son in the outdoors. My true passion is fishing......and on occasion, I read about, or hear about someone who dies at the hands of the Mighty Pacific...you feel a sense off loss, as they died doing something you (I), as an individual loves..

I mention this only because, all be it tragic, when someone dies doing what they love, you can sometimes also find comfort in knowing, for at least that moment, that they left this planet content.

My sincere condolences to his wife and daughter, and the rest of his family and friends...very sad. RIP
