Hi all-was hoping someone ran into 2 adults and a 7yo and a 9yo on the mountaineer's route sometime between 8/03 and 08/05. They are still out of cell phone range and we are anxious for news...

I day-hiked the MR yesterday (Monday) and saw no groups that would fit that description; sorry.

Barb,

I walked into the Whitney Portal Store about 5:30 yesterday afternoon. My 11 y/o grandson and I had just finished Trail Peak, and he had wanted to celebrate with a burger dinner there.

Doug was talking to a couple and their two kids. He introduced us. I am pretty sure he mentioned that one was 9, and the other appeared younger. The older was a girl and the younger was a boy (I am almost positive), although both had very long hair. Their parents appeared to be in their 30s. The mother was tall, dark, thin and attractive, but since I notice the ladies more than the fellows, I can't tell you what he looked like. Other than he was stocky and had dark (black?) hair. Unfortunately, I have forgotten their names.

They had just completed the Mountaineer's Route, in three days. All were higher than a kite, and Doug was appropriately praising the kids - telling the significance of what they had done and what it would mean to them later in life.

Might this be them?

PS. Hi to Leo!

I was on Whitney yesterday. Around 11:30 or 12:00 I saw a couple with two younger kids, but can't say for sure if 7 and 9 are right. The girl was the older of the two. I recall dad was tall.

I was on the MR route on Monday and saw the family coming down the slabs as we were heading up. The two kids were beaming and the parents full of pride. The 10 year old girl made to the top and the 9 year old boy made it to the notch before altitude issues became a concern. It is so great to see young kids so out going, not playing video games, and appreciating the finer things in life. We need families like that to teach the appreciation and respect that nature deserves. Hopefully there are more families like that out there so we can continue passing down this appreciation from generation to generation!

Job well done by the entire family!

I was anxiously watching this thread and glad to hear that all is well.

I know this message board is about Whitney. But I just have to share this. My 9 year old daughter summitted Half Dome with me in Yosemite last September - in a day hike that started from the Curry village at ~6:00 am. I was so proud of her (and still am) but really did not know who would share my feelings. Looks like this crowd gets it! So here's to getting'em started early!
