My husband I will be doing the hike and this weekend and staying at Trail Camp on Sunday night. I was wondering if you are allowed to leave your tent and packs at Trail Camp while you go to the top. Then we could just pick up all that stuff on the way down. Our packs have a detachable day pack that we could carry for food and water up to the summit. It would just be nice to not have to carry the sleeping bags, mats, and tent all the way up to the top. We are thinking we would get up really early (about 4am) to go to the summit from trail camp.

yes, it's done all the time.

in the "orientation notes for whitney first timers" on the left-hand side of the this page, go there and then look for "decide whether to day hike or stay overnight". more info if you follow the links.

That's exactly what I did, only I left at 4:30. And you won't be the only one either. You should have plenty of time to go up, come down, pack up, and walk to the Portal. No one will bother your stuff except maybe for a marmot or two.

Are we talking a detachable top lid or something like an Osprey Daylite? For me, a detachable top lid would not have sufficient capacity for this 10 mile RT. Normally, I would carry 4L water, jacket, insulation layer, rain gear of some sort, first aid kit, sunscreen, food, toilet kit and few other things.
