I have a 2 person permit for a 9/10 day hike, but my partner backed out and I cannot find anyone else who can make it midweek.

I'm planning on staying at the WP campground, and leaving about 0400. I'm looking for a partner, or a group I can join.

I have lots of hiking experience, and I'm in shape.

I hope to see you there. I have 2 out of 3 checks in place (Ken invited me, wife said it was ok), now I just need to run it by the boss to get the day off.

I need to get back on the trail - I haven't been hiking in a week!.................................DUG

I'm planning a day hike up the MT Wednesday, also. I hope to get an earlier start than you. I'll see you when you zip by me going up.

I really don't like the last, endless stretch back coming down between the wilderness sign and the Portal and I'm hoping to take the old route up from the campground in the morning so I can see where to pick it up coming down in the evening. Is there any info you can give me about that cut-off? (Is the cut-off considered a bad thing to do, like cutting switchbacks? If so, I won't try it.)

I talk fast, but I don't hike fast. I think Ken and I will try for closer to 0300 if he is willing. I will most likely just sleep in my car after driving up, so might as well hit the trail! Last July I went up with my brother and sis in law about 0200. I think we got back around 4 or 5.

Hope to see you there - I'll have my blue shirt, green pants and a fanny pack with a SPOT hanging off of it.................DUG

If you are talking about the "old trail," the cutoff is spread out between some bushes directly below the JM Wilderness sign. The best cue is to look downhill directly from the wilderness sign. Going up, it starts on the loop past the Portal Store between a big rock and a stop sign (just before you hit the cascades in the creek).

Fred, thanks for the info on the old trail. DUG67, I look forward to meeting you. I feel like I know a lot of people from this board but I've never met any of you in person. I shouldn't be hard to recognize: old, solo, carrying an Osprey Atmos 50 pack (the SPOT's inside). I plan to park in the hiker parking lot and catch some sleep before starting up - I have a silver Subaru Forester. Don't put on a bear costume and come knocking on the roof!

Hmmmm, what kind of grub will you have? I might get in after the grill closes. smile

I'll be in a red/black Mini Cooper. Wife says if I want to go I have to "economical" or something like that so no Suburban (and its comfy bed) this time......................................DUG

Burtw and Ken:

If I can swing it (the OK from my husband because I went last week...oh, to be single again!!! ) I'll be trying for a midnight departure on Weds. Can't sleep from that point on as all the hikers come thundering up the road with their BRIGHT headlights. I've never done a midnight before, but Ive been on the trail so many miles and it's so familiar, I'd rather do everything up to Trail Camp in the dark.

I'll have a yellow backpack with black piping, belts. If it's cold I'll be dressed like the Michelen man in black Feathered Friends hiking pants and lavendar down coat.

Hey guys:

On your way down, two of us more mature hikers should be on our way up to trail camp, on Wed 9/10. We plan to get an overnight permit at 11 am, and hike to Trail Camp. We then plan on summiting on Thurs, and hike out on Fri, Lord willing.

I went thru Lone Pine last Friday, comming back from Rock Creek Lake, above Bishop. Weather was fantastic all of last week, but pretty cold at night. Weather report for Lone Pine looks like more of the same for the next few days.
