Hi All, Last Saturday and Sunday I went up to the Meysan Lakes basin with my buddy Chris to climb Lone Pine Peak. We hiked in on Sat. and climbed it Sun. morning. Pretty much a full on scree/talus climb with a gently sloping ridge on top. A couple of times after we made the ridge I thought we were close to the summit because of some tall rock outcroppings, but found that the true summit is way out down the ridge, which you can't see until you get up close to it. The register was hidden pretty well but finally found it, but never could find a USGS marker of any kind. Great weather with nice warm days and Sunday mornings' temp upon waking at 0530 was 42 degrees. Only saw one other group up there from the Sierra Club WTC that was also doing a climb of Lone Pine so it was pretty uncrowded up there. Another guy was coming down from a dayhike of Mt. Mallory on Sat. and that was it for people. The lakes up there are amazingly beautiful and there were plenty of nice places to camp. I was surprised at how nice it is up there because you just don't hear too much about that area but it is definitely on my agenda to return soon. LeConte, Mallory and Irvine are beckoning me ! It was a beautiful weather in that area last Saturday. I day hiked up to Mount Mallory and was really pleased at how peaceful and quiet it was. I did see one other guy, but that was it. You were probably settled in near Grass Lake by the time I came down that section of the trail. I found out that the loose slope up to the Mallory/LeConte Plateau is worse than the loose slope up to the plateau the leads to Lone Pine Peak, but then I always enjoy a good slog and probably will head back up there sometime to do LeConte. Some pics I took along the way to/from Mallory: http://kathywing.smugmug.com/gallery/5905307_TtXDw#367307188_3DQwd

Lone Pine Peak wasn't crowded because everyone was waiting in line here:

I enjoyed your pictures. The great thing about Meysan Lake Canyon is it is such a nice place and few people, by comparison, go there.
That comment about all the false summits up on Lone Pine Peak. That sure is true.

I've been up the Meysan Trail 4 times and I'm still haven't seen ten people total.
It's find it amazing that you can find a true wilderness experience trail hiking out of Whitney Portal.

Lone Pine Peak looks like a hike I would thoroughly enjoy. Great photos! The colors of the lakes are stunning.

That chute leading from the shoulder downwards towards the camera position needs a name. Toy Chute? SteveC, any ideas?

Labor Day weekend I saw 7 people heading up the trail during the fierce wind storm. That was probably more than I'd seen total in all the other trips up (4-5?).
The great thing about LPP is the views of the Whitney Zone you get from up there. And, the scree ski down kind of makes up for the suffering on the way up.

Ouch!!!!!
When did that one happen?
I know about the foot injury on Russell and also the glissade accident. I didn't know that you had major climbing injuries at least three times...
