...that I was waiting for, and the topic gets locked before I have a chance to respond. Re: Leaving my hiking partner on the trail
Richard,
Irrelevant, yeah probably but one could also make the argument that others weekly trip reports are just as irrelevant. Those reports also show up on other web sites. You and others can call me Troll all day; I have not been offensive to anyone. Crystal? Never heard of her and don’t really care. Weak and weary??????? Moosetracks carrying me????? I don’t know about that. Bitten off more than I can chew?? Onion to the Portal, don’t think so. However, thanks for you concern. Nothing that Laura posts is irrelevant because this is the Mooseage Board. And has been for quite a while: http://piotrowski.smugmug.com/gallery/4304599_dy9PzBTW: Crystal would have never given me this perfect lead-in, so I know you're not her. A little more advice: next time start the story by stating that you have a school assignment to write some hiking satire. Permission to delete granted...

Richard,
Thanks for your inspiring comments. They were so great that someone from this web site has taken pity on me and has volunteered to take me up a mountain sometime over the next few weeks. I will send you some signed pics.

Heyyojay, I would take you up Whitney as long as I get to carry the car keys. Actually, I'm not going anywhere soon, I'm in day 10 of severe back strain. The only positive side is the meds make today's TV programing make more sense. Oh and I collect a full check while sitting on the heating pad talking to the dog (thank you taxpaers - you are the heros). If I had to pick - I would say a broken arm or leg is better than a messed up back. I've been so out of it on Valium and some other pain med that I haven't even read Moose's last TR. So anyway heyyojay, I'll carry the keys, you can carry my gear since you're hauling 40+ pounds anyway. Maybe I'll be the 1st guide to get someone to the top while completly blasted on meds! Oh and a free tip that I of course learned the hard way - never, ever ride to the ER in a Mini Cooper. You may get in ok, but getting out is a b*&ch..................................DUG

Richard,
Thanks for your inspiring comments. They were so great that someone from this web site has taken pity on me and has volunteered to take me up a mountain sometime over the next few weeks. I will send you some signed pics. My interior designer was complaining the other day that even after four months in the new house, I've still not placed anything on the walls to "personalize" the place. If you send me signed prints (PO Box 1016, Ridgecrest, CA 93556-1016), I'll be proud to place them on my wall. I have a feeling, though, that they'll only be from the lower part of the mountain, so I'll put in a request for some of Lone Pine Lake, Bighorn Park and possibly Mirror Lake. (See, even as I'm slighting you again, I'm trying to educate you as to many of the prominent features of the Main Trail of Mt. Whitney. (Please don't tell me they're going to take you up the MR. (Moutaineer's Route since you probably don't know what MR stands for.))

Dug, I feel your pain. In my younger days, I used to compete in power-lifting and slipped a lower disc. For some reason, putting 650 pounds on your back is unnatural. Go figure. I have no doubt that you would take me up Whitney. I have read your posts and you keep it real. Thanks, bro! Richard, Come on, they would deserve a higher place on your wall. Besides, I’m literally very colorful so it would at the very least add color to you wall. No, we are not going up the MR, you see, you are educating me in the different acronyms.

Oh also I found a button that locks IP addresses. Oh man, does that mean I'm about to get the boot? I promise not to post while medicated again! I thought once you ate the whole pancake AND a whole Moosie Burger you got a free ride on the board. MMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - pancake. That sounds incredibly good right now. As soon as I heal up, I'm gonna go eat TWO of them!!.................................DUG

And what makes it so bad is I've only been able to wear shoes for the last few days cuz of all my blisters just healed up. I'll let you in on a secret - I'm still serving in the Navy after 23 for the free medical. Without it I would be in deep chit...........................DUG

I would go so far to say that I am one of the few who could pull it off. I'll film it and post it on YouTube for all to see! Two Moosie Burgers would be easier though.....................DUG

Two Moosie Burgers would be easier though.....................DUG My 11 year old will be attempting Mt. Pancake next weekend (yes.. there will be photo's as I am fairly convinced he can do it at least once)... two Moosie Burgers on the other hand... not so much for the boy child.. and I can't even barely finish a -regular- Portal Burger!!!

This has definitely been an interesting thread! I do sometimes get tired of the "how much does you gear weigh?" or "what will the weather be like in October of 2010?" Those are important topics and probably one of the reasons for this site for sure. But it is nice to see a little spice in here. Heyyojay is an interesting dude for sure and I think he was just trying to have a little fun. He may be a bit overloaded on testosterone because he tends to call people out too much. I can assure Richard he know the main trail and the MR because I have been there with him all the way to the summit. He hasn't had a chance to leave me on the trail yet because I am a tuff SOB. I think it would be a great idea for us all to get together at the potluck because it would be a great venue for everyone to share stories, get to know each other etc.. But getting away is hard due to work obligations, family and everything else. I appreciate this site and the people on it, even if I don't agree with all of them every time. Best wishes to all! Just my 2 cents worth. Later.

yelper - So who left who man? I have often "split" with my brother on the trail, knowing that we will meet at the Portal. There is no one else I would split from (even when Ken TOLD me to go ahead I stayed) and there's no way in h#11 I would drive away from the Portal without my partner. That's just me. I've always thought that your chances of summiting are exactly the same as your weakest hiker. Unless other plans are made, you stick together. Just my thoughts and I only have 12 or 13 summits so I'm no wealth of knowledge. I have eaten a Moosie Burger like it was a Happy Meal though. ...........................................DUG

DUG, I can't think of a time when we ever split up. If you do I think should only be if the left behind person is going to stay put. Probably more often than not it is a recipie for trouble. Certainly you know heyyojay's story was just satire. It has always been my opinion that common sense goes a long way in this hiking/climbing business. Peace out.

yelper,
Kind of hard for me to pick out satire when I'm taking high amounts of pain meds. I mean I was taking so much that daytime TV actually made sense.
So, how far did you get?
My brother and I have split up on the the JMT side (gutiar lake) and on the main trail many times. Always with perfect weather and always with both of us in good shape (other than being tired). I know with 100% certainity than he can handle himself alone anywhere on the MT and I know that we'll hook back up somewhere on the trail or at the Portal. No more dangerous than hiking solo. Sometimes when you hike a few THOUSAND miles over a decade + with the same dude you just feel the need to do your own thing for a few hours..........................DUG

DUG67 put down the heating pad and ice 15 minutes every hour. Try to get up and walk around, stretch and move. It hurts to get started but you will feel better with ice and movement than heat and laying around. Heat feels good on the muscle but almost all back pain is neurologicly induced and the ant-inlfamatory effect of ice is WAAAAAAY more therapeutic.
