I received this from Eastside Magazine. The photo is from John Dittli Photography. His web site has some really awesome pictures. I thought everyone would enjoy the picture. Is this Tulainyo Lake?

Nope, not Tulainyo. However, check out the winter issue of Eastside when it hits the stands, perhaps there will be a shot of skating Tulainyo in there!

A few years ago when I was joking about all the "firsts" that I'd done, I was thinking of adding skating as many of the Sierra lakes as I could. That lasted until I saw how heavy a pair of skates are.
Interesting to see that someone seems to have had the same idea.

Richard, those kinds of guys are my heroes. Not quite up there with Lawn Chair Larry and Maurice Wilson, and Naomi Uemura, but up there. I met them in Carillon Canyon the day before their dive.
These kinds of people are our "Contrarions." They are scarce enough in this world.

There's a rumor going around that there will be a book on high-altitude diving soon...

Dit: > Nope, not Tulainyo.Well then where IS it, John? (By the way, welcome to the board.) Bob R: > These kinds of people are our "Contrarions."My Contrarian dream is to kayak on back country lakes. Folbot makes a 24 lb foldable kayak that can be backpacked, and there are inflatables that might work, too. Thousand Island Lake is on my Bucket List.

From the diving article: "After the dive Dave and I packed our dive gear and began the long climb back down to civilization. But before I did, I carved our initials into a quarter and tossed it into the lake to commemorate our dive."
Leave no trace? Hmmm...maybe they did...

Royce Lake. You can just make out the red band of fire retardant on Feather Pk.
So how often do you get conditions of good lake ice and no snow cover on the Sierra eastside?

Bob - You mentioned "Lawn Chair Larry". When my son and I did Whitney in 2004 there was a man at the summit sitting in a lawn chair passing out pieces of the whole watermelon he had carried up. Would that be Larry? I regret not taking his photo as it was quite a sight. He was a great guy - very friendly and encouraging to my son. Brian
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur and see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze...

All right ep, I'm impressed. I'm not sure I would have gotten that and I took the photo. Thought I'd bump this thread now that the new issue of Eastside is out. Ice like that in the Sierra is not uncommon, though it can be very short lived. We found a nice patch on Rae Lakes this month, it was 4 days old and got snowed on 2 days later. Check it out at http://johndittli.com/site/component/option,com_myblog/Itemid,29/

http://theeastsidemag.com/?p=30I have seen these hockey guys, desperate for ice, go out on day-old freeze. I watch in astonishment as they test the ice with their hockey sticks. The stick penetrates the ice regularly with one or two whacks, but this apparently means it’s ok, for soon everyone skates out and the first game begins.
I asked local hockey aficionado Brent Taylor about the stick test. “If the stick goes in easy then the ice is questionable; if it takes a couple of whacks it should be okay,” he explained. Then I asked if he’d ever gone through. “Well yeah, a couple of times,” he replied.Yikes! YIKES!!!
