Kurt,
Please add my name to the list, and I will see you tomorrow morning at Manker Flats Trail Head.

Hi Kurt & All Baldy Hikers,
The moment that I hung the phone up after speaking with So Cal Girl (around 3:15 AM) the phone rang again. I have a 15 yr old patient that is actively dying. It was his Mom explaining that his morphine drip had not been functioning for hours -- and he was in horrific pain. I could hear him crying in the background and that gave me goose bumps. He is the finest young man, truely. The On-Call night shift hospice nurse was not able to get a new IV site or change the pump's cassette. The other On-Call nurse was 50 minutes from his house. His house is a 10 minute drive from mine and so no Mt Baldy for me this year...
I sure hope I do not have to wait another full year to meet all of you "live". I am new to this board but I can not state stronly enough how much I am learning from all of you. It is such a pleasure to almost know all of you!
Oh, Chris, and every one else who is going to hike Iron Mountain on 11/1---are you sure that you want to do the easy route? The alternate route adds 3 more miles (total of 9)--plus some severe ups and downs. This loop starts at the Ellie Lane trailhead, a large equestrian staging area about 0.7 mile north of the junction of Highway 67 and Poway Rd. This northern loop is typically underutilized and offers plenty of parking (and not on the side of the Rd. like the other trailhead)--On weekends it is often very difficult to find a space to park on the Rd.) There is a portion of this trail that reminds me of the Whitney Main Trail. On this north loop there are some minor landmarks that are pretty--Table Rock and two cattle ponds. The views from the top are quite nice and you can recognize the local mountain peaks. There's a telescope at the top!
So let me know if this alternate trail holds any interest for the group.
Nancy

There were 16 people on the group hike this morning. Everyone made it to the top and back via the Ski Hut Trail. A great hike. Trip Report Pictures

SoCalGirl has all the info on Iron Mountain. I haven't been the long way in a few years, but if I remember correctly it can be done via the same trailhead. (hike up the trail and turn left?) If that's not the case, sorry. I'm all for anything that makes it longer or harder.
The hike up Baldy was awesome. Good times, great folks. I'm sure someone will post a TR, but thank you to Kurt for setting it up, arranging the "fly by" and arranging for the wildlife demo. Just incredible!!..................................DUG

Great pics, Alan! Looks like a really fun day. Sorry I couldn't come along for the ride (again! sheesh!). But I thought I had delegated the scotch/goodies to you last time, too? Oh well. Congrats to all! -L

I thought I had delegated the scotch/goodies to you last time, too? Julie brought a lot of M&Ms, which were gratefully received by various people (e.g., me).

You were obviously doing something much more important and I sure hope it went well! Sorry, Kurt, but we have a new entry on the ranking chart. 1. On-call nursing 2. Baldy hike 3. Work (other than #1)

Moosie better not be whining about missing a hike for gosh dang sakes. Glad y'all had fun.I seriously considered tagging along but I already had plans to golf at Ojai Valley Inn CC.It was a spectacular day, 95 degrees on gorgeous world class golf course that happens to be my favorite SoCal golf course.

Nancy, I'm sorry that you weren't able to make it. I was looking forward to seeing you. Will we see you on Iron Mountain next week?
Kurt and all! What a great hike. Kurt.. thank you for arranging it and setting a pace to accomodate all of us. It made it an enjoyable experience. It was great to put faces to some of the names that I've been seeing on the boards for all this time.
The 3AM start from San Diego made it an interesting challenge for me, but I will say it was well worth it!!! It was still dark so I'm not sure who it was, but a voice somewhere towards the rear of the pack instructed us where we could see the International Space Station in orbit high over us in the predawn just after we started hiking (thanks for checking the trajectory prior to the hike and then sharing with all of us!!!!)
Hope to see everyone again on the trail soon!!!

Wow, what a beautiful day for a hike! Wish I was there. Thanks for sharing pics for those of us who couldn't go. At least I got to enjoy the evening watching Kurt's Journey to Everest at Adventure 16. Awesome photos! Thank you Kurt for sharing your adventures. Marie

A helicopter landed on the summit as we approached, but took off before we reached it. We thought it might be Richard and/or MooseTracks with our celebratory feast. We looked far and wide but found nothing.
Wouldn't that have been a cool way to make my "surprise guest" appearance. I ended up having some customers that I couldn't put off, so I wasn't able to sneak away from work. It would have been great to be there.

Thanks everyone for a wonderful hike on Baldy. It was great to meet some new faces and to reconnect with friends. Thanks for playing "hooky" for the day and joining us! I shall look forward to another one soon. My pictures are here. Here are a couple highlights: Thanks Noel for letting me borrow your 300mm lens!

KURT, Sure would like to know what camera you were using. You almost stopped the rotor blades on the chopper and still got a clear, distinct image of the chopper body.............steve
