Hi All, You may not remember me, but I was the Dad, who along with 2 other adults and 8 members of the San Clemente girls cross country team, summited via the MR this summer. Just thought I would share a bit of fun stuff that a local paper ran on our epic adventure. Obviously the paper can't even come close to describing that grueling day, 23 hours round trip! and I, not having completed my advanced composition class, can't entertain you with a Moosiesq narrative, so I will let the papers do the talking. Hope you enjoy. Kurt http://www.ocregister.com/articles/girls-going-cross-2196685-country-rock

What a wonderful heart warming story. Congratulations on a safe trip and an experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Hi Kurt
Tell Mike hi next time you see him. We did some climbing in the Sierras together several years ago. If you want a great story ask him about our Williamson adventure. It's great to see how well his daughter has been doing. I understand she is ranked nationally.

Kurt,
Great story and great trip. I read it in this mornings SunPost. Keep me in mind if you do this again in the coming years. I would volunteer to go with the group.

Echoing all, really great story. Congrats to the S.C. cross country team and "guides". Climbing mountains has so many benefits. The obvious are the physical, beauty, serenity, view from the top, etc. But the teamwork, problem solving, mental fortitude, stamina, etc that is required can be equated to most life experiences. For me, climbing a mountain has so many benefits that I can apply to every day living. Again, great job, Kurt. Very inspiring... "Be the inspiration that you seek from others." m.c. reinhardt

Richard Richard, I will be seeing Mike today at the girls practice. I will tell him hi for you and will definitely ask about your adventure. He had told me a number of interesting stories before our climb. In hind sight, Kinda makes me question my intelligence for following him up that mountain...But knowing Mike, I wasn't going to let my daughter go without me! Don't get me wrong, If it weren't for him, summiting would have been only a pipe dream. He is an animal! And yes his daughter is amazing as well! Dam those genes! Kurt

Scott,
My daughter has been asking since we got back, when we were going again. She want's to do the MR again and has even asked if we could do the east face! I think I should be worried! Do you go up trail or MR? I will definitly let you know when we plan to return. I can tell you one thing however, we WONT be doing a "Day trip" again. I know Richard P. thinks this is a day-hike but I would like to actually remember where I've been and what I've seen!

How true! I can't tell you how many times and in how many different situations, I've already used this experience; My daughter as well. Who'd a thunk! Just a big slab of granite, yet so full of life...

Kurt,
I always do it as a day hike on the main trail. Although, this year I did it twice (within 3 weeks of each other). Once at the end of doing the JMT and the other as a day hike (13th time on top). I do it in September around the 2 or 3rd weekend. I would like to do the MR some day. Keep me in mind. I have been playing tag with Mike to sit down and talk about hiking. I live in SC as well, and I am in the SCHS pool most mornings playing water polo. 6:00am-7:30am If you are ever down that way during the early am stop by.

Another great article! I enjoyed your "most spectacular sights". Nice trip, calsurfer! Btw, I was a calsurfer but only for two years out of Del Mar.

Hi Kurt,
Congratulations to you and the San Clemente Cross Country Girls Team! I also read the story this morning in the Sunpost. What an awesome gift and a life time of memories you have given to the girls. Way to Go!!!

Kurt, I saw Alex last weekend win her race at the Clovis Invitational, She is quite the runner. I agree with the article. My daughter climbed Mt Whitney when she was 16 and ran XC in college. She is now the Coach at Clark Jr High, the feeder school for Clovis. My son is a freshman at Clovis and he summited when he was 11. Climbing Mt Whitney makes the 5k seem alot easier. Thanks for sharing the story, and tell Alex good luck in the rest of her season.

Fantastic story and TR! I sure wish there was something like this when I was in school (not many mountains to climb in Florida ).

I know you! My wife and I read that story, she asked if we could do the same trip maybe only 1 week.(not the same distances nor route, just being in the wilderness for a week) I wouldn't want to leave 4 kids home with Grandma for to long, might not be a home to come back to! Also, didn't realize how many San Clementeans there are on this board, pretty cool; We will have to organize a trip, like I said, my daughter is chomping at the bit to go again. Kurt
