I am trying to get an understanding of typical conditions in November on the main trail as well as the mountaineer's route.

I am fairly experienced with winter hiking. Done a lot in the White Mountains. Also climbed Mt Rainier twice, albeit with guides who were doing the real technical work.

I am fine with self arrest and crampons but I have not set up rope and anchors on my own. Are those skills needed in November?

On related note, I would be very interested in doing some more technical winter hiking with those who are more experienced so I can gain more proficiency. Are there any mentor groups or anything?

thanks,

Brian

I am planning a Nov 13/14 hike of the Mountaineers route. One night at Upper Boy Scout. Ice ax & crampons are a good idea.....

Brian, the main trail route (in winter it is a route, not a trail), requires axe and crampon skills and use, assuming typical precip, but not protection.

On the Mountaineer's route, many prefer to use anchored ropes for descent in particular, and I believe the guided groups use rope for both ascent and descent, on the last 400 feet.

You didn't say where you live, in terms of groups and resources?

It all depends on the weather. My friends and I love the MMWT in November because it can be challenge or nice walk with no one around.

We've run into snow as low as 9,000' or had clear sailing to Trail Camp. We've had crystal clear weather or as miserable as it gets...wind, cold, white out and snow. We have never attempted to summit in November, mostly because we were ill prepared...skills or gear depending on the trip.

Lot's of gear and clothing come along for the ride for last minute choices.

I thought I had auto email notifications on this but didn't see any...

In any case, sorry for the late reply... I live in Monterey.
