I finished my thru-hike of the JMT, from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney, on August 30. Just as I was arriving at the Mt. Whitney trail junction, a trail runner took off, trying for a new speed record. I don't know if his attempt was supported or unsupported, and whether he was successful.

I haven't been able to find anything saying whether a new record was set around that time. Has anyone heard anything about this guy?

Otherwise as far as I know the current record for a supported attempt is held by Kevin Sawchuk at about 3 days 21 hours, and the unsupported record is held by Reinhold Metzger, 5 days and 7 hours?

Thanks!

I think Kevin tried again this summer too. He posts on another board that I belong to

Kevin's first record was broken in August 2007 by Sue Johnston in 3 days, 15 hours, and 32 minutes. See post on 8/31/2007 this board by Chris Scott. This was a supported attempt. Chris and Deborah Askew assisted.

The current unsupported record was set in 2007 by Michael Popov. His time was 4 days 5 hours 25 minutes.

I was camping on Bear Creek in 2004 and Reinhold Metzger ran by us, trying to break his own record. He still took the time to stop and chat with us for a few minutes.

Was someone hurrying? These folks just sound like people who enjoy a brisk stroll. cool

I wonder what the records are going the other way? Seems like it would be more fun to start in Yosemite and finish on top of Whitney.................................DUG

Anyone heard of a High Sierra Route speed record? I mean I don't recommend speeding along, it is a route to be savored. But while I was on it I met another guy moving fast out there and we were wondering if there have been any fast through hikes of the SHR.
