So it was Nov. 6, 1962 doing odd jobs after leaving home at around 10 years old, Cuba was just attack well ... and my cousin and I decide to join the Army this was in Denver so somehow we get to the recruiting office, go in and I end up in the Coast Guard and he ends up in the Marines he spent more time at sea than I did, he went off to Cuba, then R&R in S.E. Asia onboard an Aircraft Carrier . Now one looks back and you know that those years can never be replaced but you would never change any day of that experience, I have used this story many times over the years .During rifle training a young man next to me ask the instructor if it hurt to kill someone the reply "no son just hold the butt very tight against your shoulder", at 17 and fresh off the farm I knew the world was looking different and I was going to learn alot of new things.
46 years later I still see friends that are having trouble with adjustment and sadly have lost several that couldn't adjust. My cousin being one of the group.
Everyone on this board that has spent time in the service has a lifetime of stories and if you have not served , we do odd things and may hold back on letting go , but not one day went by that we did not think of back home and how is was going to be when we got out, And gave us a period to question where we wanted to go during the rest of our tour , After 9 years of college I chose the desert and the mountains. Thanks to the years in the service and the experience that gave me to make the choice. If we can give that choice to everyone we have served a fine duty. Thanks Doug

"During rifle training a young man next to me ask the instructor if it hurt to kill someone the reply "no son just hold the butt very tight against your shoulder"

I dont mean to be disrespectful, but I almost spit out my drink when I read that.
My Grandfather, who is fading in health, was a Marine who served in Korea. He trained as a S.E.A.L on a submarine and told is that when you go number two on a sub(back then)its everyones problem!!

How we get to live today is because of sacrifices like yours! Thank you, and may Obama bring our boys&girls home!!

P.S.--- I also grew up in Denver in the old historic Baker Neighborhood.

On the strength of one link in the cable,

Who knows when thou may'st be tested?
So live that thou bearest the strain!

From the Halls of Montezuma, to the Shores of Tripoli. HAPPY 233rd BIRTHDAY MARINES!

Thank you to all vets. HAPPY VETERANS DAY!

Verse 1 of one of my patriotic songs:
A nation filled with pride.
Just see the eagle fly.
Majestically, soaring high.
This land of brotherhood.
This land of liberty.
Where men have fought to keep us free.

Happy 233rd Birthday Marines! May the heritage live on.

I spent eight years in the Air Force as a meteorologist - some great years and I valued everything I learned and earned in the military.

Thanks to all the veterans who served and to all the folks who supported them.
