Hey, guys, I’m going to miss your Woodson adventure.
Woodson and Iron mountains were in my backyard when I lived in Rancho Bernardo, and I was going up and down those mountains for regular exercise for about eight years, especially to keep in shape for Whitney climbs and other adventures. It was my goal to climb every named peak in San Diego County, of which there are more than 250. Unfortunately, I started a little late on my quest and climbed only 62 of the highest before a corporate move relocated me to beautiful Charlotte.
During my treks I hiked and mapped every trail I could find on Woodson Mountain (and many other San Diego mountains) with my Garmin GPS device, which you can see here.
For anyone not familiar with Woodson Mountain, there is a unique geological feature, near the summit which I call the “Diving Board,” which is a huge granite flake. I think it is well worth seeing, and standing on it! Here is a photo with me on it:
Here is another one with my daughter Angela doing a swan thing:
If you get clear weather, especially without the marine layer, you can see San Clemente and Catalina islands 86 and 88 miles away, respectively. A big prize would be spotting Mt. Baldy 97 miles away (point your compass 323 degrees MN). You can also see Toro Peak 38 miles away, and Hot Springs Mountain, the county’s highest peak, 31 miles away.

I wish you the best on your hike!
