Thor,
Good grief.. I forgot I was running the risk of competeing against the Chargers that weekend.

I was hoping to hike the 4th (Sunday) 'cause I know a couple people have to work the 3rd. Let me see what all is going on and I'll post final meeting time and dates in the next week.

Chris

Hey, guys, I’m going to miss your Woodson adventure.

Woodson and Iron mountains were in my backyard when I lived in Rancho Bernardo, and I was going up and down those mountains for regular exercise for about eight years, especially to keep in shape for Whitney climbs and other adventures. It was my goal to climb every named peak in San Diego County, of which there are more than 250. Unfortunately, I started a little late on my quest and climbed only 62 of the highest before a corporate move relocated me to beautiful Charlotte.

During my treks I hiked and mapped every trail I could find on Woodson Mountain (and many other San Diego mountains) with my Garmin GPS device, which you can see here.

For anyone not familiar with Woodson Mountain, there is a unique geological feature, near the summit which I call the “Diving Board,” which is a huge granite flake. I think it is well worth seeing, and standing on it! Here is a photo with me on it:

Here is another one with my daughter Angela doing a swan thing:

If you get clear weather, especially without the marine layer, you can see San Clemente and Catalina islands 86 and 88 miles away, respectively. A big prize would be spotting Mt. Baldy 97 miles away (point your compass 323 degrees MN). You can also see Toro Peak 38 miles away, and Hot Springs Mountain, the county’s highest peak, 31 miles away.

Click HERE for more photos on Woodson and a fuller version of my topo.

I wish you the best on your hike!

Ok Friends and fellow hikers... Chargers are AFC West Champs and playoffs bound... however... I know that the game is on SATURDAY which leaves no excuse for missing a SUNDAY hike!!! wink

So... for those of you still interested I will be leaving the trailhead on the 67 about 9AM planning on taking my time getting to the top. Those of you interested in the summit rendevous should plan on being at the summit around 11AM.

And I promise... no rice krispie treats at the summit this time! cool

BUMPITY BUMP BUMP...

Kick off is in an hour so I figured I'd get this out now....

Barring any torrential type weather I will still be heading up Woodson tomorrow morning with my children in tow!!!

Anyone wanting to walk up the east side approach with me I'll be at the trailhead and heading out about 9AM...

Anyone using one of the other trails... rendevous at the summit is planned for about 1100!

Hope to see everyone there!!!

A beautiful day for a beautiful hike.

Met up with Hypoxic Zombie and Bud the Wonder Dog at the trail head by the CDF headquarters on the 67 just outside Ramona. No one else had said anything about meeting at that trailhead so after looking around and waiting a minute or so we headed on up the trail.

It was very shortly into the hike that my calves started SCREAMING at me and I was wondering what the heck???? The trail may be fairly short on that approach (under 2 miles), and nicely paved, but it's pretty steep in quite a few places. That was alright though because everytime the kids found a boulder worth trying to scamper up I got to REST!!!

Hypoxic Zombie worked with the kids each time they found a boulder they wanted to try, showing them where their hands or feet should go... standing below them to catch them if they fell... encouraging them. I think he created a couple of monsters wink

We got to the top in good time and sat around, visiting and eating our lunches. Hypoxic Zombie headed down after awhile, the kids and I hung out until a bit after 11 to see if there were any others coming up from the west side. When no one showed we headed back down ourselves.

All in all... a wonderful day... a great hike... terrific company... and lots of fun!!

The rest of the pictures are here . Hope to see more people on the trail! Stay tuned for the next group hike... and again... suggestions for trails are always welcome!!!!

Chris - Nice TR. Looks like you all had a great time. Wish I could have been there, but I'm not exactly local. That hike reminds me of Mt. Diablo nearby that I use for training hikes. From the trailhead it's about 3000 feet of constant steep up!! I'm going to try and get my two boys (almost 13 and 9) up there this year and eventually up Whitney.

The pics were great. You have two adorable kids. The only thing missing were more pics of the lovely SoCalGirl! grin

Between you, Laura (and others) you keep the rest of us well fed and inspired. Thanks!

Rob.. flattery will get you everywhere. wink I take my kids (almost) everywhere with me and am planning on the JMT with them in 2010 ending, of course, on the summit of Whitney. So they are in the "training" mode with me now. They will be 13 and 14 then.

See ya on the trail,
Chris
