As the thread was locked I decided to make a new one...:

Due to people dropping out of our trekking group bringing our total to 2 people we decided it was best to save Whitney for a future year/season since both of us know the risks involved in long term backpacking trips in pairs instead of groups of 3+...especially in the winter.

I wanted to thank everybody for their opinion as it did bring more awareness to the dangers of Mt. Whitney during this time of year.

Cheers!

Have an enjoyable winter season, however you spend it. Perhaps I'll see you out at the Xmas light parade in Ventura next weekend!

Sounds like a good decision, S8. But I hope that you guys will climb Whitney this summer. Be sure to remember and enter the lottery for your trip this Feburary. It will be much safer in the summer, and it is well worth the effort.

I don't know if dangers is the right word. I would use the word risks.

I did not want to discourage you, I just wanted you to know the risks involved in this adventure. Maybe you should give some thought to going this winter with the idea of going as far as your skills and clothing will take you. We started our winter trips to this area staying the night at Lone Pine Campground, then progressively working our way up the mountain over the next several years. Now, we usually base camp at Lone Pine Lake.
