First reading the thread of what you climbed, two stand out as very powerful, Mom and her 17 year old daughter Half Dome, and a young couple standing on the summit , the future of mountaineering will grow with those experiences we can write and talk about the mountains but when you engage people to the level of doing and they see ,hear, touch this other world and feel the rewards we have all grown.
The Portal Crew says Was another fun year more tales to tell and people to meet, wish everyone a great year ahead and on those down days just take a walk ,look back at where we are and want to go in the future, focus on the we not the they. Thanks

Doug you are a wise sage. Your wry sense of humor, knowledge and stories are becoming Whitney legend. Thank you for providing this board and store. They are so much a part of the Whitney experience. Thousands of lives have been effected.
Merry Christmas and Happy New to you and family.

Doug - I am one of those lurkers that cost you a ton of money in bandwidth as I move around through these forums - often many times a day.
Thank you for taking the time and footing the expense to allow some of us to dream about what may be.
Happy holidays to you, Earlene, and the rest of the Portal Store crew!
Happy holidays to all of the folks out there that contribute to this board and for keeping our dreams alive! Thanks to all! Best wishes for a great holiday season and a wonderful and fruitful New Year!

Doug, thank you for this board. The information and inspiration I received here helped me to introduce my 12-year old son to Mt. Whitney. I hiked a lot when I was a kid on the Wasatch Front, but haven’t done much hiking for a lot of years. Call it a mid-life crisis but I decided to get back into hiking this year. I didn’t want my son to grow up not experiencing the sublime beauty of nature. We were blessed with perfect weather. On July 23rd we watched the sunrise from Trail Crest at the top of the switchbacks, and then had stunning views of the Sierras on a cloudless morning from the summit of Whitney. It was an experience that neither my son nor myself will ever forget. So thank you again. I have two more sons to introduce to Mt. Whitney, so I will be back. Thanks for maintaining this website and message board. All of us that climb/hike appreciate everything you do that contributes to our enjoyment and success up on the mountain. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Rick
PS What do you think about carrying individual chocolate milks next season at the Portal Store? It's a great recovery drink

Doug Sr, Portal Crew, and everyone else around here... As we roll around to a new year with new goals to be met, new places to explore, and new friends to be made it's important to remember all that has gone in the year before us. I was introduced to not only Whitney, but the Sierra in general this year and I have to admit I'm addicted! As iseebergy in the post above, I also introduced my kids to Whitney this year... and we'll all be back. Thank you for all you do Doug.. and to all the people on this board who have made this such a great year. Have a great holiday season!!!!

My two cents worth is that this site is worth a million bucks. What a great group of people who take the time to help one another out. Being a fairly new person to the site, who is the original creator and keeper of it? A ton of thanks. I hope you all have a Cool Yule and a Frantic First.

I thought everyone knew that Al Gore was the original creator!

I feel so privileged to be a part of this adventurous and "good hearted" group. I just got accepted on a winter climb; Mt. St. Helens in Jan. One of the reasons I feel I can attempt this climb (hopefully many more winter climbs) is because of the inspiration, support and information I have received on this board. A million thanks to Doug Sr., portal crew and the participants of WPSMB! HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! It looks like we're going to have a white Christmas up here in the NW; it's a winter wonderland! HO HO HO!!!

MC have a Merry Christmas. I only met you once on Baldy but love reading your posts and hope to hike with you next year.
Doug thanks for this site man I agree with the other post that I don't think Whitney would be as special w/o you and this website.

Doug, I too am one of those lurkers who uses up tons of your bandwith. Thank you for providing this place. I know the time and money it takes to run a website and it's forums, and appreciate the effort. I'll pay you back soon in the form of the purchase of a gigantic pancake. (unless I run into you, then beers on me).

Another year of exploring the heights, and the gift of returning safely home from all of the adventures. I couldn't have asked for more. Merry Christmas to all, and many happy adventures in 2009! Y'all come up and see me, y'hear! From the luckiest girl in the world: Climb Hard, Be Safe. -L PS: Slide show is coming, but it's taking a bit longer going through the pics than I thought...
