I've had a dream of skiing this route for years... going in over Taboose pass, then hanging a right and approaching Split mountain from the west. I'm looking for beta. Has anyone here skied any part of this area? Would the class 2 northwest slope of Split be skiable or just rocks? Any information would be very helpful. I know the snow coverage isn't exactly optimal this year, but it sounds like the avi danger is quite low at least. If you think this plan is completely nucking futs... what would be a really classic ski tour on the east side 2-5 nights long? I have some books on the subject but first hand recommendations are priceless. Also, if anyone would like to go you would be more than welcome. If I can't find anyone to go with me, plan B is to take the standard route from the east, maybe without skis depending on partners.
Thanks in advance.

Oh man! That would be a nucking nantastic adventure! If you go, I want to see a write-up and pictures!

I hiked that section of the JMT last June, with a side trip up to the summit of Split Mtn. If you went in March or April, I think you would have a fantastic time on the west side of the Sierra crest. I don't recall anything steep in that section of the JMT, and the Split Mtn slope is simply a steady slope. The slope steepens once you get to the saddle, but it seems like you could ascend the slope on skis with lots of diagonal zig-zagging. You would encounter a much steeper slope descending the east side to Red Lake.

The biggest worry I would have are the major stream crossings, but you could stay on the east side of the major drainage, since some hikers even do that in the early summer.

Ya I have done it. We went in at Bishop Pass and skied to Taboose. If you send me an email adress I will send you some pics.
