speaking of which, back on topic, the show last nite went great, with lots of good questions by obviously enthusiastic people. I had some computer problems, but one of the audience saved me.

Kurt's presentations next week should really be awesome, as he is on the mountain right now, and will have absolutely current information. Is that diligence, or what?? smile

Way to go, Mark! I wish others would use their compasses, too.

Thanks for letting us know about the terrific view. It's a great experience when you can spot anything from 162 miles away!

Sometimes I think I should open up my eyes and look at what I'm taking photos of. In reviewing the bazillion photos I took on Saturday documenting conditions on the Main Trail side of the mountain, I see that none other than KW and his client signed the summit register right above me. There were two people hanging out at the top of the MR at around 2:30pm. If I had looked at the register, I could have walked over and had a chat with them. (I do have a photo of them sitting.) One consolation - I can state that I've shared the summit of Whitney with Kurt.

Bummed that we won't be skiing next Friday, but at least we'll be able to do it as a snow climb.

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking forward to seeing you all this week in So Cal. Here are some random comments based on postings above...

Thanks Ken for doing the show on Friday night at A16 in Tarzana. I hear it was a great success! I was thinking about you giving the talk as I was in my sleeping bag ready to go for the summit of Whitney the next day.

The clinic schedule at the top of this thread posted by Richard is still good. I will not be doing one in Costa Mesa. I'm planning to do all the rest of them though. There will be a couple companies on hand as well. The Jansport rep will be around and I understand attendees will have the opportunity of purchasing Icebreaker clothing at 30% off. A16 usually also gives out some discount coupons they call Adventure Bucks for people who attend.

Baldy is on for Friday April 3. Meet at 6 am at Manker Flats. It will be a fun hike. I was up there on March 25. The trail is dry up to the hut. There will be snow for most of the rest of the way. It's firm in spots so bring your ice axe and crampons. I'm not going to bring my skis. There isn't enough snow to warrant me bringing them from Bishop although what snow is there would be great skiing. Here's a picture of the Baldy Bowl on March 25:

Richard, I'm sorry I missed you on the summit of Whitney on Saturday. That wasn't me who you saw at 2:30 though. We were back at camp by then. We were a group of 5 people and reached the summit at 9:10 am. I'm looking forward to you joining us Friday on Baldy though. Pictures from the climb are here.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Christo Kuzmich- Adventure 16 Store Manager here.

I don't mean to promote A16 here, but I wanted to post a clarification on the Icebreaker deals.

Icebreaker Superfine Tech Tees will be 25% off April 1-15 in all Adventure 16's.

There will be a special deal at the Whitney 2 clinic in San Diego Store on April 1st and West LA on April 3rd: 30% off all Icebreaker (This special cannot be combined with any other promos such as Scout discounts or Adventure bucks).

See you Wendesday Kurt, and see some others Friday at Baldy!

Thanks Ron. The camps were set up at Lower Boyscout Lake and a little above Upper Boyscout Lake.

Clinics have been going well. The reps from Icebreaker make a great happy hour spread of wine, cheese, and other goodies to eat. They start serving that at 6pm.

I'll see some of you at Baldy tomorrow morning and others at the clinic tomorrow night!

Kurt,

Thanks for the informative and educational presentation last night in the San Diego store. (The wine and cheeses were good, too!)

My brother-in-law and I are planning to go in August 2010, if permits are available at the time.

I have a question regarding the Circumnavigation Route (CR), as noted in Richins book.

(via LBSL>Whitney-Russel Col>Arctic Lakes>Guitar Lake (JMT)>Trail Crest>Summit>Whitney Portal)

- Would you recommend this path?
- What permit process does this require?

You also mentioned in the talk that the Class 3 on the Mountaineers Couloir wasn't as steep at the pictures made it seem. I have a great deal of rock scrambling experience with exposure and steep slopes in Joshua Tree.

- Based on that experience, would you recommend this route (MR) over the CR, while exiting via the Mount Whitney Trail, meaning ascending the couloir with a full pack?
- Do I need to worry about snow in August for either route?

Thanks a bunch and thanks again for the great talk.

Derek

If you're interested in going around Whitney and have a few days extra (less if you're fast), I'd suggest including the Wallace Creek drainage. (You do have to be able to scramble because there is no easy, fast way in. You can enter and exit via the JMT, but that's a lot of miles.)

Lots of photos:

GigaMike, or MooseTracks can give you an independent opinion on the wonders of this drainage. I can't stop throwing out the superlatives.

If you're interested, I can provide additional information.

I'm not Kurt, but here are some answers:
> Would you recommend this path?
It is longer than the main trail, but the tough section over the pass is barely third class. Years ago, I did it with a full pack and had no trouble, except for AMS (altitude issues).

> What permit process does this require?
You will need both a North Fork overnight permit and a Trailcrest exit permit.

> Based on that experience, would you recommend this route (MR) over the CR
People climb the MR with full packs. Just take it slowly. But if you go that way, consider camping on the summit, since you'll have all your gear.

> Do I need to worry about snow in August for either route?
There will be some snow, but likely avoidable between Iceberg Lake and the notch.

And Richard, I would sure like to see the Wallace Lake area myself. ...one of these years!
