Hi This time of the year the mountain will lower due to high winds and as the winds fade the mountain lifts above the ridge line this keeps the summit from losing material , if this didn't happen Whitney would be lower than White Mountain or those close seconds in Colorado, check summit post when this happens you can see Whitney from Pond California .

New guy here, finally registered - mapman. Been reading the board for quite some time and hiking the area for awhile as well. Happy to be in the company of so many fellow enthusiasts. With regard to the webcam pic, etc., I thought the high pressure gradient over the Sierra crest caused the peaks to settle somewhat, not the high winds. Here's hoping for more low pressure.... grin

Nice try Mapman. What we actually are seeing is a clandestine attempt by the Governator to find other ways to lower the State's deficit. You see, the California red ink there in Sacto is piled up higher than Whitney. If Arnie can figure out a way to effectively lower the mountain he just might have a chance with the budget! Best wishes Arnie.

Did the picture with full captions ever get posted somewhere? I'd love to see it, but I kind of got lost in this thread... Sorry if this is a FAQ and I just missed it.

Right now it looks like it's snowing. Any comment from the Portal?

And it's raining here in Fresno! In May!

What it looked like from over in the desert.

I'm glad I wasn't there today.

Steve,

Is there any way to present a collage of images that would show the snow load/melt over the course of the winter? I think it would be interesting to folks if we could have a representative archive shot, say one from each month, that would show 'how it was' and 'how it is' currently. Some folks like more snow, some less. I fall into the later category myself cool
Thanks.

That's a good idea. I have a lot more work I want to do with the web cam. But unfortunately, life gets busy. I will get to it, I promise.

I also want to put together a process to show the past day's images in a time-lapse video.

I'm currently in the process of snapping pictures every two weeks at the same time in the day to do that very thing. I started six weeks ago.

I'll post a link to a ZIP file or online photo album when it is all done next year.

I'll probably eventually do some kind of time-lapse on the archive of Whitney webcam images I've been keeping:
archive of Whitney webcam images

Others are welcome to do what they may in the meanwhile.

What would you like to see?

Thanks Joel, this archive is just what I am looking for. I guess it would be nice if Steve could put a link to these images somewhere on the website. Otherwise I can just bookmark the address and get my fill. Thanks again.

I was wondering if time lapse function buttons could be added to watch the entire days pictures. The Hume lake web cam has this.
can be seen here

Watching the clouds build up is so interesting.

Thank you for the Whitney cam. Its wonderful.

webcam seems out of focus for the last few days, or is it really windy?
