We chose 10 different Saturdays as we are doing the day hike. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like they are swamped at the permit office.

That's good to know I was starting to worry, we are going for a 1 day hike and gave about 12 different dates we could work with but I know our dates are right in the busy time for whitney, guess I'll just cross my fingers.

See what was posted on the Board in March 2008. As you can see, a lot of people were notified late in March, including somebody who got his first pick. Well, it was about this time last year that people started getting "hit" on their credt cards for the Whitney permit fees. ....Just wondered if anyone's heard anything yet? I've been checking my on-line credit card billing every day lately, just hoping. You'll know if/when I see some activity on my credit card... there'll be fireworks visible clear down to SoCal!

Well... I heard from one friend who said she got her "sorry" notice today.
Anyone else heard anything?

Tax return? You mean IOU don't you? Do they give IOU's for permits? Just kidding.

From looking at the Inyo NF page, day hike permits into the North Fork for Russell are part of the Whitney Zone Quota and are grouped with the Main Trail day hike permits. This appears to be the case even if you don't intend to climb Whitney at all, and just want to do Russell or Thor. Does anyone know why this is? Am I interpreting the quota info from the Inyo page incorrectly?
From looking at the 2008 permit availability, getting a last minute day use permit should not be a problem. I'm just curious as to why they chose to lump them together.

Before last year, day hikes up the MR were not subject to quota.
Several years ago they started requiring permits to see the number of people day hiking the area. I was assured at one point that the permits were for information-gathering purposes only. However, due to high numbers, Inyo NF threw the day hikers into the main trail day hike quota, reasoning probably being that it all starts at the same trail head. They sited damage to the Mountaineer's Route, especially the area below Lower Boy Scout Lake.
Ironically, it is this same area, up to Lower Boy Scout Lake, where you can still day hike without needing a permit.
Those are the rules, and the hiking community did not have any say in the process.

I don't see any irony. I don't think there was ever a lot of traffic from people only interested in Lower Boyscout Lake. In the unlimited era, I expect there were more people who didn't get a permit for the trail, who went toward the MR only because it was allowed, even if they really only went a little way and turned around. The new rule should decrease the peak-bagger traffic to more serious 'thru-climbers'. There was also a safety concern that you had to allow people to use the trail for return if necessary, even if they went up the MR. But, if you allow that, as you should, you might as well put everyone on the same quota. Dale B. Dalrymple http://dbdimages.com

Last year the notice arrived in the mail on 03-27-09. It was postmarked the 26th. I think they all went out at once.

Just so y'all know there is NO bias here: DENIED! REJECTED! THANK YOU FOR PLAYING! But at least I got a few nice notes of "Sorry, Moosie." and "Good Luck, Moose" handwritten on the application. Hmmm... maybe if I wander in there tomorrow and shed a few tears and look decrepit enough... No worries: walk-in is the way to go. Guess I had too many people along for my birthday celebration... -L

Sorry Laura on your slap down. Hafta admit though that it gives me some hope that at least ONE government entity is doing what is right, though I'm sure they'd have preferred to give you the nod. I'm certain my beat down will arrive at any moment since I've asked ONLY for the July 4th weekend this year. I figured, what the hell, maybe I'll finally meet Moosie doing the walk in...

For those of you who have not yet received replies, hang in there. With the large number of applications this year, March Madness may be over before all the responses are mailed. Have fun watching the games this weekend.

Here's the latest update from Inyo National Forest: YES, finally, at 10:00 am today, March 27, we reached the bottom of the lottery box. 6023 applications were sent to the 2009 Mt Whitney lottery 3638 reservations / 2043 unsuccessful The charging of credit cards, and successful mail will begin this next week.
Lots of people have been calling with concerns about charge cards that had to be canceled. We will not disqualify someone for a declined charge card transaction. When we find a card number that is declined, we will call the person and ask for updated charge card information.
It will take more than a week to get all the letters out. I will write again when the last of the mail is sent.
The calendar with dates that have space still available should be updated in early April.
Cheers This implies to me that all the notices of unsuccessful applications have been mailed as of today -- I'll try to find out for sure. (Unfortunately, I'll be off-line Monday and Tuesday.)

Sounds like nobody will hear anything until the second week in April at the earliest.

Actually, most of those who lost should get their notice next week ...that is if my assumption that unsuccessful letters get sent out right away. It is much easier sending a "So sorry" letter, because no permit numbers or anything else needs to be recorded.
And some of the successful will get notices next week, or at least see the charge go through on their credit card.
