Just gauging interest here:

LADIES ONLY Weekend

Any women interested in a 3-day, 2-night backpack this summer? Would not be incredibly hard, but still I would try to find a somewhat challenging route/loop. Participants would have to be in fair shape, able to carry a pack over light off-trail terrain, self-sufficient in their own care, enjoy sunrises/sunsets, gorgeous views, possible fishing opportunities, and maybe, just MAYBE, a peak.

This is still in it's infancy in terms of exactly where, but I'm sure I could come up with something. Maybe in the late July/early August time frame.

Anyone? Bueller?

It dazzles my mind that you have to ask....Momma might be interested too...

Count me in... unless it's in the middle of July... Parents have scored a 9 day fishing trip to Alaska and I gotta keep down the fort while they're gone...

Maybe we can go to the Mall... wink

Oh I would so love to do something like this. I live in AZ, but have family in Riverside, this would help on not making it a long drive to the Sierras. Also would be nice to hit some cooler temps that time of year. I will keep on watching for posts on this.

Laura, what a great idea!

My summer schedule is still in limbo - waiting for a Whitney Permit notice... so that I can then (hopefully) get my JMT permit that will co-ordinate date-wise... and summer is getting closer every day.crazy

Your idea for a backpacking trip really sounds fun! I can just picture it - hiking with new and old friends, swimming in a lake with a most beautiful backdrop, tribal dancing around the campfire... darn, I wish I could bring my drum! smile Oh well... I'll bring my harmonica.

I'll be watching for updates, Laura. I'm just hoping that all these pieces are going to fall in to place perfectly.

Would LOVE to go. Summer stuff still a bit in flux. Please post dates as soon as possible. Some of us are juggling summer vacations, summer school, etc.

OK, ladies. I've really been excited about the overall response here. So here's what I'm putting out there:

DATE: Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 2

(I figured this is far enough away from Labor Day and I have another trip planned middle August already so I can't take TOO many Fridays off in a row!)

DESTINATION: Pioneer Basin

I'll put up more deets about the hike (elevation gain, mileage, etc) later, but I was talking to my dear friend Hoppy last night and this was a trip she and Andrea Mead Lawrence did years ago.

Depending on how many people get in touch with me, I'll go ahead and reserve a permit for that weekend. Any further participants would be responsible for getting their own permit. There are plenty of great climbs in the area, fishing galore, and lakes to swim in. I looked down on this area from the summit of Mt. Stanford (N) last spring, and it looked phenomenal.

There you go: dates and destination. So who's with me???

cry cry cry My permit date for my JMT hike is July 29th!

I'm really sad I'm gonna miss this, what a fun trip this will be. It sounds like responses have been good for your dates, but I'll keep watch in case something changes.

Count me in, thank you for organizing, Laura. Let me know what I can do to assist.

Anyone want to discuss carpool from the hostel?

Quick checking of info on Mt Stanford puts it out of Onion Valley... Sooo....

I have room for me plus 4 in mine... with gear. I'll have to wait until we get a little closer to see exactly when I'll be arriving at the hostel... probably thursday.. depending on when Laura wants to light out on Friday...

Anyways... I will stay there (I think)... even if not... there's still room in my car wink

Someone should probably ask Doug Sr to set aside a couple of rooms... or maybe room 11 (the big one) for a night of two for the "group" if very many plan on staying at the portal the night before...

Chris: That is Mt. Stanford (S) that is out of Onion Valley. It's one of the University Peaks in the area (University, CalTech, Trojan, etc).

Mt. Stanford (N) is out of Horton Lakes/Rock Creek area. That's where we're starting.

Sounds great, ladies. I'm thinking an early start, since this is in prime T-storm season. But maybe dmatt can give us a good forecast as we get close!
