Question: are the alternate routes to Mt. Whitney, either Cottonwood Pass, Cottonwod Lakes, Army Pass, Shepard Pass, etc. easily marked? Is there a route that is more easily maintained than others that is easy to follow?

Ask AlanK and Eric about the extra miles they did a while back when they misinterpreted a sign on the west side of Cottonwood Pass.

That is the only place I can think of where you might make a "mistake" on the trail to Whitney. (The sign is downhill of the trail you want to branch on to after crossing the pass.)(I could probably find a photo of it if this is too hard to understand.)

A few extra miles? It's not a bug, it's a feature! laugh

Richard P., yes a photo would be great for us folks that are more "visually"-oriented! Thank you!

Make a hard right above this sign! Otherwise, you'll get to see Alan and Eric's feature.

All routes out of the Horseshoe Meadows area are clearly marked other then Army pass, I cannot recall any sign indicating Army Pass at all since it is no longer maintained but all routes to New Army are marked , what isn't marked is when you reach the top of either, you will have to know to begin down hill west where there is a trail.

Now of course your not going to have a sign at any of these locations that says Mt Whitney this way but a brief scan of the map can leave you without doubt of where to go.
