Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Horseshoe or other areas open?

Is the Horseshoe Meadow area open this early? It appears from the INF pages that it does not open until later in the season.

If not, can anyone suggest a good place to spend the night before heading up the Mtn? I will be driving up Wed of next week and beginning to hike the following day. I'm coming from sea level so wanted to get a night sleeping in the truck fairly high up before heading out. Thanks for any suggestions.
