I didn't updated it to 3.9 because I had been told there were some issues with it. I haven't had any more issues with the unit since I've added the garmin maps though so hopefully that was the problem.

George, what kind of PDA are your using? A Juno? I just won a Juno on ebay this weekend, and soon will be trying one out...

Tom: I use a Dell Axim x51 (now discontinued). Keep it in an Otterbox. It runs Windows CE. I use it on several NPS projects: logging wildlife observations, mapping trails and xc routes for our Trails data layer; campsite inventory; archeology sites. Works great for that. Assume you can now do the same with the higher end Windows phones that are out. ArcPad's kind of expensive. Don't know if there's cheaper alternatives for Win CE.

As a side note, and only for data collection, I like the separate bluetooth GPS -- it allows me to acquire a position where I want it as I move around getting other data. I only carry it in a plain brown wrapper on the trail -- try to make it look like a well-thumbed book of Muir quotes.

Right: "Come to the mountains and get their glad tidings. Specifically at 36°46'30.9" N, 118°25'24.3" W." cool

Sooooo, what glad tidings are we looking for there at the SE corner of Charlotte Lake, in the small meadow, roughly 76 feet from the shoreline?? Buried treasure? But then again the whole Sierra range is a treasure smile

I would stay away from Garmin until they lower their prices way down.

I find their support is not good and they don't update their import/export software.
It is 2009 and they don't even support direct kml import. I can't find any import program for Google kml files for my Etrex HCX on their site. For what they now still charge, they should kick down maps on memory cards with any purchase, and give free data out on their site to people who bought one in the last few years. Currently they nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING.

I think I will go with a Iphone with the built in GPS next time around. A lot of programmers are making some really nice affordable gps apps for the Touch and Iphone. And these programmers update regularly, unlike Garmin.

Things are changing daily. I would do some major research before shelling out big bucks for any GPS device that could be discontinued. Make sure the software gets updated and you can import your gps data without a major hoop jumping conversion process.

I'm not sure I have the coordinates precisely correct, but that's roughly where the guy with the brown-paper-wrapped GPS hangs out during the summer, I believe.

for conversion of GPS files, I would use GPS Babel.

Cool program; thanks! I think your reply more directly applies to cdc's gripes about Garmin, but I'm always happy to find a program that lets me play around with maps more. Turnabout is fair play: I'm a very contented MacGPS Pro user. YMMV, of course.
