Has anyone recently mapped the route up the snow field to the right of the switchbacks? I know some people bring along GPS to record their track. Just curious which route up people are taking right now especially since we may have some snow this weekend.
Thanks

If anyone does (or has) GPS'd from Whitney Portal to TrailCrest, I'd be interested in getting the file. Sequoia Kings is having rangers do a bunch of the trails for a somewhat more accurate fix. Not available to the public, unfortunately, but in most cases there's not a critical difference.

I did Onion to Kearsarge and it's pretty close to the USGS map.

I have GPS tracks from Tuolumne Meadows to Taboose Pass from last year, mostly JMT but also some trails that are less traveled. The differences to maps was sometimes quite significant, especially in terms of distances indicated vs. measured. Usually the numbers the GPS came up with were higher than what maps state, even though I ran the GPS on power saver, which straightens the route between the individual points it records more than at full accuracy.

I can give you a URL to grab the files and give you some info on exactly where we went. I'll be recording our trip this summer again, with all of the JMT and some alternates, given we do this thing in both directions.
