I once saw a sign posted at a trailhead that said "If the lizards are out, the snakes are too"... I certainly wish I'd have seen the lizard first...

Careful my friends... even when you think the weather is too cool for it.. the snakes are out...

He's a southwestern speckeled... we were hiking up in the Cuyamaca's (San Diego) on the Airplane Monument trail (big equestrian turn out off the 79)..

I kept hoping I would see one while hiking at the Wind Wolves Preserve yesterday but no such luck, it's been about 15 years since I have seen one.

I saw one making it's way across a paved trail at Crystal Cove State Park here in Newport Beach a couple of weeks ago. Was out for a run along the bluff overlooking the ocean and almost stepped on a "stick" only to have it start slithering off! Whew!

"stepping" on sticks that have fangs and rattles is usually a bad idea!!! cool

Yes, the snakes are out. This bad boy greeted us last Saturday in Chino Hills State Park.

I have almost stepped on two of those bad boys in the past couple of weeks at Peters Canyon here in OC. One was a baby diamondback and one was a Western (that one was a granddaddy!)

Arizonans seem to be finding their rattlesnakes the hard way, per this story from Phoenix today.

Of course the one guy mentioned in the story who was bitten after trying to pet a snake (yes, adult beverages were involved) was probably trying for a Darwin Award...

The closest I've come to a rattler was on Black Mesa, OK, on our CO/OK/NM highpointing trip in 2003. On our way back down fromt the "summit" of Black Mesa, we heard the buzz behind us and saw this snake no more than a foot off the trail where we had just walked past.

I read that story earlier... all I could say in regards to trying to pick the snake up was "DUH".. silly silly people...

Hi SoCalGirl - my snake was young, maybe 2 feet long. He had some strange dark colors near his rattles. I have not seen that before.

Richard.. an absolutely beautiful snake.. I would say he's a Red Diamond (Crotalus ruber).. about 5 buttons on his tail from what I can see.

http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/c.ruber.html

The banding on his tail is similar to a Speckled Rattlesnake (which is what I saw this weekend), but more vivid.. he is also similar to a Western Diamondback, but the Western doesn't typically come in the bright of a reddish color and the bandings on a Westerns tail are typically more even and symetrical.

Nice pictures...

Laura... am sad you didn't get pics of yours from this weekend. Do you have a description? There's a rattler specific to the Inyo/White's area that I've never seen... grin
