Tom... I've seen the picture in my books and on some websites... I love the markings...

I have a question for the board members from the medical field. I was bit by a rattle snake in 1968. I had a reaction to the Horse Serum and spent a night in the hospital. Question: Is Horse Serum still used to administer the Antivenin? I live and hike in the San Gabriel's and have been wondering this for a while. I would certainly like to avoid another snake bite, but if it were to happen, I would want to avoid Horse Serum again.

Just ran into my first rattler of the season yesterday. Had about six rattles...not bad. Seemed really disoriented. Maybe just out of hibernation? For Gary...it was on Garcia Trail in Azusa.

"There are two types of antivenin (sometimes called "antivenom") in use today. They are derived from antibodies created in the blood of a horse or sheep when the animal is injected with snake venom..."

"Newer kinds of antivenins derived from sheep have been studied, and one (CroFab) is now licensed for use in the United States..."

It seems like the move has been to the sheep-derived product, Crofab, as mentioned above, due to fewer side effects.

Thanks for the replies. Great article SoCalGirl. By the way, we met on the Baldy hike last year. I still think, as most do, that the best course is to not get bit. We believe that when I was bit that the snake did not release any venom. I have no skin or tissue damage to remind me of what happened.

Gary.. I remember meeting! I think I spent to much time sucking wind though to carry on to many intellegent conversations wink

As for the whole "I still think, as most do, that the best course is to not get bit".... I totally agree with you on that one!!! Getting bit and not being able to get to help has always been one of my biggest worries when hiking... 'specially since I do alot of hiking with kids...

Two friends and I came upon a mature rattler on our way up Queen Mountain in Joshua Tree a week ago Sunday. This guy was very energized and made lots of noise to warn us from 30 feet away. I don't know which variety it was, very green in color with separated oval patterns on its back. It hid under some rocks before we could get a picture.

Had rattlesnakes on my mind today, hiking the 'Way Up Trail' in Elfin Forest, just West of Escondido, So. Cal. Kept remembering about 3 yrs ago when I almost walked up on one in the gravel area near the picnic tables at the top. All my walking on the gravel made enough noise so that I didn't hear the rattling 'till almost too close.
Rattlesnakes are pit vipers, so they have a 'heat picture' of your hot leg, even at night, and they do love to bask on the warm trail later on in summer after dark.

When I get a little money, I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes.

Who knew that there were so many snake enthusiasts on the message board? I grew up in the foothills of Ventura County and know first hand that this is the WRONG time to be hiking around. These guys are just waking up and looking for their girlfriends, babies out for a stroll, and they don't appreciate us interlopers. They are pretty though...

"Snake season" here in San Diego's "lower" lands is almost a year-round event... so long as you're careful about what you're doing and use common sense... the first thing Mom asked my son after hearing the story was "what did you learn?"... "to check before I sit down"...

At least they rattle. The Copperheads, Corals, and others give no warning. I almost grabbed a Copperhead once while gathering wood for a fire, SCARY! They can be beautiful though, I will give you that.
Oh and I love the song! smile

MY GF and I just spent a week on the PCT, Campo to Warner Springs. We saw snakes everyday. Black Racers were a dime a dozen. Saw two California Kings, also a beautiful Rosy Boa. The baddest one was a four foot Red Diamondback, he was pretty fat, too.
