I have a small group that tentatively plans on dayhiking Cirque Peak on June 13th. Our plan is to stay Friday night at Horseshoe Meadows, then on Saturday hike to the Cottonwood Lakes, up New Army Pass, then over to Cirque. After that, its back to Horseshoe, then a night at Doug's hostel in Lone Pine.

Because of the recent storms, I was wondering if anyone was planning on being around the NAP area this weekend, and if so, can you please provide me with current trail conditions (amount and depth of snow).

The following Sunday, we'll planning on dayhiking Olancha Peak. I know that MooseTracks was with a group on Olancha last month, and it looks like a good challenging dayhike to prepare for Whitney next month.

I'm also wondering if anyone knows conditions at NAP right now. We were thinking about going up there this weekend for a hike, but have become a little worried with the recent storms. Anyone have nay info on snow in the Horsehoe meadow area we'd love to hear it. Thanks.

June 5: A couple of friends and I are heading for Mt. Langley around noon tomorrow. Camp at Cottonwood Lakes. We'll probably will go up north of Army Pass, rather than it or New Army Pass. But if the clouds permit, we should get a view of the conditions on one or both of them. Actually, we may descend one of them.

-----

June 6: I was up all night on a search for a 9 y/o boy north of California City (successful). Just got home. Will shower and go to bed for a while. Plan to get out tomorrow, haven't decided where.

-----

June 7: Well, I started driving this morning, with the intention of trying the Cottonwoods. But when I got to Lone Pine, the skies over the Cottonwoods were pretty clear, while those over the Whitney area were "more interesting." So I decided to hike up the Whitney trail, and give Wotans Throne a go. I got to within 400' of the summit, when I got tired of postholing. Turned around, and got my WPS burger an hour before the store closed.

-----

June 12: If you are interested in climbing Cirque Peak without going all the way around from New Army Pass, my favorite way is from the Cottonwood Pass trail. The route is here. Follow the blue line. Note that it's considerably shorter. From the map, the distance from New Army Pass around the cirque to Cirque is almost two miles.

Bob: Any information that you can provide about the New Army Pass area will be greatly appreciated. I am O.K. with snow, but there may be a couple of people in my group that could have an issue with an accumulation of snow. Enjoy Langley this weekend. Whitney Mike

I won't bore you with the details, but a friend and I are meeting at the Visitor's Center in Lone Pine at noon on Saturday (13 June). Our goal is Mt. Langley, but by a route different than Army Pass or New Army Pass; there are several possibilities. We'll camp somewhere near Third Lake and summit on Sunday. Will probably do a couple of other peaks while in the area.

Because of the current weather system, we may bring tents.

Bob R. Two of us will be heading up to Lone Pine on the 12th, and spending the night at Horseshoe Meadows. We'll leave from there Saturday morning to the Cottonwood Lakes. At that point, we'll evaluate snow conditions, and to see if New Army Pass is doable. If it is, then we'll head over to Cirque. No matter what, we're staying Saturday night at Doug's hostel, and will have a nice dinner at Seasons.

Good luck with Langley on Sunday. Maybe we'll see you on the trail sometime Saturday.

We may be heading in that direction on Tues. so any reports would be greatly appreciated. Looking to see if there's going to be any problems going over NAP without crampons.

Two of us took off from Horseshoe Meadows on June 13th around 7:00am and headed towards New Army Pass. The trail to Cottonwood Lake 1 was no problem, and the first snow patches were above Cottonwood Lake 2, but all were easily passible. For some unknown reason, we got on the wrong trail by Long Lake and ended up on the wrong side of the lake, then the trail ended. At that point, around 10:00am, it started to lightly snow. From where we stood, we could easily see that there was plenty of snow patches on NAP. We also could not find the trail, so we justed headed back down to a good steak dinner at Seasons, and a night at Doug's hostel.

Five of us are coming back up this Saturday to make another attempt at NAP on Sunday, and our ultimate goal of Cirque Peak. Hopefully this time we will make it.
