[font:Comic Sans MS]This is my first posting on this message board. Although I have been reading comments from all of you, I never made any. Until now; I want to thank all of those familiar names on this page for all your comments and pictures and personal experiences pertaining to the Whitney Trial. I've been inspired many times by reading and looking at Moose's notes and photos, as well as Richard P, Blooty, So Cal Girl,...etc.
On July 1, 2009, my husband (53) and I (47) summitted! What an awesome feeling of accomplishment, so empowering. What a great day that was! Thanks again for all your positive notes to this web page. smile

On June 29, it being our wedding anniversary, we packed our backpacks and took a drive up highway 395. We stopped at the Ranger station and picked up our permits and stayed in town that night. The following morning we set out from the Whitney Portal at about 10:30 am. We hiked to Outpost Camp, and decided to stay, so at @ 2:30 pm we called it a day. It turned out to be a good thought as we acclimated to the altitude. We spoke with some guys who had just returned from their summit. One guy's comment to us was, "Man, that was the NARLIEST" thing I've ever done". This was a "young" guy, not an oldie like us, but a young strong dude...... So I started to doubt myself. He explained that there were 2 areas of concern: The snow at the cables, and the 2nd area being right near the top of the switchbacks. The next morning we left our camp at @6:30 am. and hiked slow and steady up the hill. We did come across the snow at the cables, and it was a bit scary.... Then crossed the second area with snow.....above the switchbacks, that was kind of "Precarious", but we made it with no incident.....We continued on, and summitted at 1pm. Signed the register, and took photos and snacked a bit.... then headed back down after about 45 minutes.. It was great!!!
We are thrilled about this accomlishment, and look forward to doing it again, soon!.....
photos to follow.....

Does that mean that you are going to set up a Flikr account (like Laura uses)?

I would like to, but I don't know where to start, I have to read up on it I guess, can you point me in the right direction? If its not too much trouble. Is there a fee involved?

SOMEbody rescue this thread from itself!

Ofelia: VersatileFred was not addressing you specifically with his sign-off: "Orientation notes for First Time....(cant remember the rest)" this is his sign-off that shows on all of his postings.Ummm, I think that Doug Sr., was "feeling" your confusion....that is probably growing by the second...

Don't worry about it; go hike, have fun, and reward yourself with lots of yummy goodies.

Hi Ofelia we started this board some years ago with the basic function to have trip reports and questions about the Whitney area and keep it very easy to do that , over the years as the internet grew photos and many option were added to the software , I can see that has a plus but at the same time if someome has trouble just posting, them I have failed to follow my own guidelines, why I started the board . Your trip report is the most important function of the board and if I need to review the software to make it easy for anyone to post a report I will do that. Thank You Doug

Congratulations.

It's always nice to hear from new fellow hikers. The first time is always the most exciting. But somehow Whitney gets in your blood and forces you to come back and do it all over again. Each additional time will change your perspective and experience.

Ofelia: Way to go! And good for you figuring out how to post a picture. I'll bet you frame one -- the two of you look great.

Whitney *does* get into your blood, doesn't it...
Really great picture of the two of you!
Congrats on your summit!
