HST stats Jul 16-20.
Day1 = 11.1mi (Cres Mead to Lone Pine Creek Camp), Day2 = 12.1mi (To unnamed meadow 4mi past Arroyo Jct), Day3 = 16.2mi (To Junction Meadow) Day4 = 10.5mi (To Guitar Lake) Day5 = 14.5mi (To Summit then onto Whit Portal)
My GPS recorded 64.4mi rather than the 72 on Map and 82 on the Crescent meadow trail sign (71 plus the downhill from summit).
Pack 38lbs with 2L water & bearvault - Granite Gear Vapor Light Pack - 2.2oz Tent (tarptent.com)
Tons of mosquitos in the valley/evenings (bring 3oz 100% deet per person). Trail in excellent condition, no snow until just before summit (30yrds - no gear required). No need to take shoes off to cross streams/rivers. T'Showers/Lightning every afternoon, get to Guitar lake before 2pm and to the summit the next day before noon to avoid bolts/day hikers. Did fine with low top hiking shoes (recommend low gaiters to keep crap out). If you fish bring a light rod - trout galore. Medical likelyhoods - 1) blisters (duct tape & neosporin), 2) ankle sprain (hiking poles), 3)lightning (dont stay above tree line past noon).

Congratulations on a successful trip! Your pack weight is something I hope to attain someday. What did you bring for food? Thanks, Brian

That's it? For the whole day? How many calories are in those pro packs?
I got my pack down to 38lbs for my recent 5 dayer, but I used an Ursack which really isn't as good as a canister -- and isn't permitted in many areas.

What is a Propac? Google only finds pet food! Looks like their line of compact, vacuum sealed pouches, service for one (1) Likely smaller (more to a vault) and slightly lighter. http://www.mtnhse.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=M&Category_Code=MHPROClicking on each nutritional info, seems to be about 500-550 calories per serving (per pack) The more i look, the more i like.

dudes, these meals are incredible! I looked forward to them all day. I had one for lunch and one for diner and it was almost too much to eat. If you're a hearty eater bring a pack of flower tortillas and make wraps. I was able to fit 14 pro-pacs in my BVault-500 and stuffed the cracks with the bars. got my Pro Paks on ebay. there's some on there now item #270411600208 here's a list of the Pro-Paks http://www.mtnhse.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=M&Category_Code=MHPROother than the chickin & rice, all are fab (surprisingly, even beff strog.) although the lasagna will really leave a cheesy mess of your spork,

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, the main advantage of the pro-packs is that they take up less space in your canister. Have I got that right?
They would still weigh about the same per amount of food, yes? And of course they would need to be rehydrated with boiling water.
I've seen these before in the store but passed them by because they were (at least at that time) more expensive. Maybe I should give them another look.

Hmmmm.... Here's a picture of Mountain House Pro Pak meal: It still looks like they would take up unnecessary space in a bear canister. Last hike I took, I bought the same meals, but the four-serving size. I opened the packs, and divided them into three equal zip loc bags. It was the perfect meal size for me. And the zip locks packed into the canister way better than all that unnecessary foil. I heated the meal in my two-cup aluminum water cup over a titanium esbit wing stove. Only I ate it as it heated... too good to wait!

Yes, main advtg is the vacuum packing and that they are more of a reasonable amount to eat in one sitting. the 20oz reg meals are really too much. the exra 4oz when rehydrated makes for sluggush post-prandial hiking.

a disadvantage of taking the food out of the packs (whether the regular MH or pro-pak) is that you need to dump the food in your pot. bit more keystrokes, especially if using a Jetboil PCS. if you leave it in the bag then all you do is add boiling water, stir, let sit for 8min, and eat out of the bag. no clean up. bit heavier trash than zip lock, but negligible.
