Prior to a Whitney MT. trip in Sept. We want to do a 3 or 4 day loop on a part of the John Muir Trail, preferably at the Northern end (Yosemite).
I would be interested in any-ones experiences / preferences / ideas etc.

Thanks.

Nick.

to see the heart of the JMT, I'd do this:

enter over Bishop Pass, Dusy Basin to the JMT, then northbound over Muir Pass, down to Piute Creek and back out over Piute Pass.

Every time I am in Yosemite, I can't wait to get the heck out of that place and down to Kings Canyon...

I just returned from introducing 3 friends to JMT who had never ever been to Sierras.

Because of their limited time, I chose for them a day in Yosemite, followed by backpack from Tuolumne, first night at 10,000 ft at lakes short of Donahue Pass, second night lakes just south of Island Pass with glorious view of Thousand Island Lake/ BAnner/ Ritter, third night at Ediza Lake, next day was dayhikes to Nydiver Lakes/Whitebark Pass and other direction to Iceberg Lake. Plan was to go over Shadow of Minarets trail next day to Cecile/Minaret and out, but because of graupel/snow and 18F (August!) we stayed at Ediza another night and exited out Agnew Meadows to Mammoth. Harvey

PS you asked about northern end so this is a good one. Also enjoyed (the week before) South Lake to Onion Valley in 3 nights. Agree with SEKI comments.
