We have a group of 4 with 3 first timers leaving 9/24 to Outpost for the night and then to the summit on Friday 9/25. All very excited and ready for a great hike.
3 old guys in their 50's will try to keep up with the 21 year old.
Look forward to seeing all of you on the trail and at the summit!
This board has been a great wealth of knowledge in helping us prepare and train. Can't wait for those burgers on Friday evening.
Thanks for all the help

In my crowd, we call them guys in their 50's younguns, and the 21 year old is barely past puberty.

Just select your gear with care so you have enough to stay comfortable and safe, and leave all the luxuries at home. Go slow and steady, and stop for ten minutes every hour for some water and nibbles. Before you know it, you'll be there!

Ed;

Have a great time!!
Sometimes, its about the journey - not always the summit.
But - ahhhh, what a magnificent mountain she is...
I hope you have a most amazing time and return, as we have, time and time again.
(the burgers & pancakes ain't too shabby either!)

Ed,

Further to Bob R's post.. I set my sights on Whitney, trained for about a year...attempted a solo summit, and as the Chinese would say, "I had good fortune that day".

Many things can happen. I wish you success. That being said, your success is already achieved in having such aspirations to begin with.

You know, as a marathoner and avid runner, I always look at the end result (be it a race, or a summit) as my reward for putting in the training time. And believe me - as a first timer this past Labor Day weekend, just being in the grandeur of the mountains was reward enough. Now cap it off with a summit! Best of luck!

Well part of our group we made it to the Summit on Friday at about 1015. Arrived at the Portal on Wed 9/23 in the afternoon and set up camp. Kyle and I did a little warm up hike to Lone Pine Lake and back then dinner at the store and waited for Rueben & Alan to arrive. So here we are 3 old guys - Ed at 55, Rueben at 54, it was Kyle's birthday - 51 and Rueben's nephew Alan -19.
Thurs morning about 1100 we set off for Outpost and arrived about 1330. Only ones at camp so we had our pick of spots. Set up camp, had dinner and crashed early. Friday at 0400 on the trail and made Trail camp about 0545. Filled our water and off to the switchbacks for sunrise. Made it to Trail crest about 0815 and we were all feeling good for the push to the summit. Rueben, Alan and Kyle had a good pace going while I fell back by 10 min or so. I used the excuse I was taking more pictures. About 0940 we were within the last 1/2 mile when Alan became too sick to continue and ran out of water. This was Rueben's 4th trip so he went back with Alan and I gave Alan an extra liter of water for the return trip. Turns out their filter became clogged at Trail Camp so Alan was not able to fill his 3 liter bladder. Kyle was ahead of me by 15 min and was waiting at the summit when I arrived about 1015. Took a few quick pictures, but we only stayed for 10 min or so as we were concerned about Alan and wanted to descend quickly to catch them. Kept in contact with Rueben & Alan by radio and Alan was doing better. We regrouped at Outpost about 1415, broke camp and made it back to the portal by 1700 in time for a fantastic burger and a cold Sierra Nevada. We headed down to the Hostel for the night around 1900, but by the time we cleaned up we were too tired to go downstairs and socialize. Back to the Portal on Sat morning for breakfast - Mt Pancake was too big to tackle. Thanked Doug & Earlene for all their kindness and found out we missed visiting with Richard & Mike Friday night at the Hostel. Too bad as we have loved hearing about their adventures. Had Doug sign a copy of his book and we were off on our way back to So Cal and the fires in Moorpark, where all our homes were safe. So here I am on Sunday afternoon a little sore, but thinking about when we can make another trip back and what we can do different so Alan can officially make the summit - so close we think it counted.
Thanks to everyone on this board as you all helped make this a fantastic trip - Ed
