Just wondered what the real conditions are today. Forcast was for 17-22 deg at summit; with 30-45 mph winds, and sometimes up to 70 mph gusts; possible snow flurries, and I have two buddies up at UBSL last night, trying to summit Russell today via East ridge...I really hope they turned around if these conditions held throughout the day...

Tom's group split up at LBSL, with some heading for Thor and the rest heading for Carillon. Their original plan was Russell East Ridge. We tried to warn off another couple heading that way. I would not have wanted to be on that ridge in those conditions.

My guesstimate was that the wind was blowing (in gusts) to 50mph on Saturday. Two pairs of gloves did not keep my fingers from turing into icicles at 5:00am as we were heading up from The Notch. My guess was that the temp was in the 20s with the wind chill taking it sub-zero.

At around 7:30am this morning, the Portal temp was 31 degrees.

The three of us in Tom's group that headed up to Carillon found it windy but tolerable. We sheltered in the rocks at the saddle out of the wind, ate lunch, then scampered up and down Carillon. We only stayed long enough to sign the register. It would not have been a pleasant time on Russell. Back at the saddle, we saw a couple coming off Russell - not sure if they summitted but no reason to think otherwise.
