Out of curiousity, I just wondered who is hiking or climbing Mt Whitney this weekend.
You will know me as I'm the slow guy you will pass on the trail. Best of luck to everyone. AND, if you're hiking another mountain, maybe you can just let us know what you're doing. This will be my second time up in a month (I didn't make it last time.) I'm hoping to do a bit better and have hiked San Jacinto twice since my Whitney trip a month ago (and 4 times over 10,000 in the last 6 weeks). I guess that makes my last Whitney attempt a practice hike :-)
I appreciate everyone who writes on this board and find the journals of the hikes inspirational. I e-mailed Bob R's post of "A Whitney Story" to nearly everyone I knew. And the latest "Whitney in the Moonlight" from Raphael, made me feel as if I was on the mountain. Thanks so much and safe hiking.

Mm. No mountains this weekend. But I *am* running the Long Beach Marathon. I think there's a 45 foot peak somewhere along the route.....

When I did marathons over 10 years ago, I used to tell people I was the fastest "Fat" guy out there. I really wasn't fast, I just kept moving. I'm hoping that will help me on Whitney. I'm kind of trying to celebrate my 4 year anniversary of cancer surgery and my one year anniversary of receiving a new hip. Both surgeries were in October. I still cannot believe how a new hip can change your life. I'm going from not being able to walk 1/4 mile a year ago, to hiking 10,000 foot and above mountains with absolutely no pain!

Wow. That is a great story. I'm not quite at the hip/knee replacement age yet - but I'm getting there (52). My parents have lots of friends who have had joint replacements and have been able to get back to dancing, walking and being mobile again.

I made it to the top for the first time on Labor Day this past year. Hoofed a 35 lb pack up to Consultation Lake on Friday, then up to the top and back out on Saturday. I am proof that slow and steady will do it.

Just make sure you take enough clothing. Might be a cool weekend. (It hailed/sleeted on Friday of Labor Day weekend).

A little off topic, but are spots in the campground more or less available this time of year? Just need a spot to crash early Saturday night before heading up early Sunday. Thanks!

Wow, congratulations on overcoming your cancer and joint hurdles and making the most of your modern medical gift of new opportunities.
My time on Whitney is still a couple of weeks away, so my training climb this weekend will be to the "top of the incline" in Nisene Marks State Park.
Have a great climb.
