Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster.

After having to cancel a trip to Whitney last week due to a fluke accident (twisted my knee carrying 80 lbs of cat litter down a set of stairs, two days after running my first ultramarathon without problems), I'm hoping to still make it up there next week. Is it worth reserving a permit at this point, or is it pretty much guaranteed that there will be walk-up permits available this time of year? My plan is to get there Thursday, and get a permit for Friday. Also, if a walk-up is likely, should I still try to get there at noon, or is it safe to show up at 3 or 4 pm?

Thanks for any advice.

I called the ranger station this morning to find out about the availability for day hike permit for this Sunday. They said that there were 87 permits available for Sunday. I am looking forward to a very "lonely" day indeed.

I don't think getting a permit next week should be a problem at all.

According to the INF website, none of the 100 day hike permits for your day have been reserved. Pick one up any time before they close on Thursday, at 6 PM.

Anybody in the area tomorrow, look for some old ranger guy--well past mandatory retirement age--trying to climb the south face of Wotans Throne.

Thanks for the advice!

I think I will keep the cat(s), but not buy litter in giant Costco size bins...

I hope that ranger takes some good photos of his route.

He usually does.
