My next big adventure is Rainer in July I am interested in a discussion about Rainier. Is there a better place to do that then this Whitney Board?

souloscrambler, Knowing when to turn around is an important skill to have. (especially when it is on your last 14'er)
you have been busy, only one 14'er to go. If you don't get Shasta by June let me know maybe we could day hike it.
glad to see you are doing well, what did you think of Polmonium and the exposed ridge?
Keep the trip reports coming.
Ken

Ken has recommended Cascade Climbers on a number of occasions.

There are some blogs and the board maintained by the climbing rangers at Rainier, "mountrainierclimbing.blogspot.com
I have been trying to find a board like this one, but have not been able to. I attended a REI presentation recently and found it very helpful. A rescue ranger from Rainier presented a talk and slide program about Rainier. The most revealing to me was that if you wait until the guide services have started taking clients up, the trail becomes easier. They put "ladders" across some of the crevasses to save time from having to hike further to get around them. Also, he showed some of the rescues he had been involved in as well as recoveries. One other very interesting thing he said was those from California & Colorado who have hiked the 14ers there are in for a surprise when they take on Rainier.

Dear Souloscrambler
While yes it is true, as I have told you the toilets at Rainer are the worse I have ever experienced.
With that said, I do believe your confusion as to the significance of Rainer is based upon your dayhiker mentality, which disqualifies any mountain that cannot be conquered with a very early start, some water and a power bar.
I do believe once we return from our Orizaba trip you will be enlightened to the world outside California--LOL

I do believe once we return from our Orizaba trip you will be enlightened to the world outside California--LOL Please don't insult the day-climber mentality - I'm almost a confirmed member of that society. Rainier has always been considered a training ground for those aspiring (sp?) to bigger and better things. Maybe the bathrooms are crappy, by design, so the system isn't shocked when presented with what you'll see in most places outside of the U.S.? (I've never used the one at Muir Camp, but was pleasantly surprised by the Ammo Can I could dump my Blue Bag in to at our high camp.) Speaking of Orizaba, I've heard rumors that soulo is going to try and get my drunk so that he can convince me to take Denali off of my Do Not Climb List.

CALIFORNIA RULES! Actually, I was thinking of doing a little redecorating of the toilet at Camp Muir so that we would all be a little more comfortable. A fuzzy lid cover and rug are a must. One of those little scented pine trees hung in the corner might be a good idea. I understand if you can't stay the night Souloscrambler, but maybe you can stop by for a visit on your day hike. I sincerely hope that your Pico de Orizaba climb goes well!

Great response.
I agree the fuzzy rug thing sounds like a good idea. Perhaps we should also add a "home is where the heart is" wooden plaque that you can buy at the dollar store.

From what I have read of souloscramblers posts, I think he would love Rainier - accomodations not withstanding.

i can't argue against 10,000 ft of air and ice. i tried to find Ranier's downfall. there isn't one. Besides its a 14 er. i must go. As long as you over nighters don't make a science project out camping, i am there.
