That was a great day. My son and I hiked with Rick Graham, Rick Kent, Richard P and GigaMike. The whole group only made it to Dawson because Richard wanted to head back to go skiing. Rick Kent could not make himself turn around and went to Baldy, so it qualified as a Baldy hike. Eric and I went back the next week and did the whole thing. That prompted Richard to do it too. And probably the others -- my memory is imperfect here.

I am in for February 5 and can HIGHLY recommend the Whitney clinics. I have been to a half dozen and they are GREAT. Regardless of your situation, going for sure, thinking abut going, kinda thinking about going, denying your desire to go, married to someone denying your desire to go or not in a million years am I going. Just go and you will love it.

Mike told me the snow level yesterday was at 8000'+, but today has got to be a lot colder, so here's hoping it's a big dump with no heat wave to follow.

There was snow well below the top of Mt. Wilson this morning. It looked like the level on the fornt range was about 4000'. things undoubtedly changed with today's rain, one way or the other.

It's looking like Baldy will be quite ski-able on the 5th. Any suggestions where to rent AT (Randonée) skis in the LA area?

I don't think there's anywhere in So Cal that rents AT gear Ken. The only place I know of is Mammoth Mountaineering Supply.

Way too much info, but that's how I roll! My favorite memory is I'm in the outhouse doing my thang at 6:15 thinking I'm way late. Left the outhouse door cracked for obvious reasons when I see the classic Mustang gong by at 60mph!!!! That's Kurt! Only cooler arrival was Richard's Ninja outfit on his bike during our last Baldy Hike. See Shin's pictures. The dude rides his motorcycle all the way from Ridgecrest with his two hiking poles sticking out. He looked like something out of a Ninja movie!

Jeff,

I'll be bringing my skis. I read today that the trail is mostly hard packed to the hut with good snow in the bowl. If I can't skin up I may have to schlep the skis up on my pack but I'd sure like to get a chance to ski the bowl.

In the interests of full disclosure, Kurt had a family issue come up that demands his attention on tuesday, so I will be giving the talk on tues eve in Solana Beach. Kurt will give the remainder of the talks, and be there for the hike.

Both Kurt and I will give autographs. smile

My friend Phil will be coming with me and he'll be bringing his A/T skis too.

I'm just curious, does anyone know if a host will be opening the Hut on Friday and if the spring water is still running?
