Hi 'crew'...

Jeff Scofield, Nick Rice and I will be hiking Baldy on the 23rd. David Bosman may join us. Anyone else? Recent TR from davidlayla posted on 12-10-2009:

The first one we encountered my partner was right behind me and when both our weight was on that section, a 30 ft long and 15 ft high piece of snow started to slip down the mountain. I immediately told my partner to back up and asseced the situtation. I continued the traverce slowly. The sound of the snow breaking loose is like no other and hearing that and feeling my feet move was more of an experience than I expected on Baldy. By our way down those areas seemed to settle, however we kept our distance while crossing.

So far it's:
Jeff Scofield
MC Reinhardt
Nick Rice
Norma Ryan
Shin
David Bosman (maybe)

6:00 am start early enough? Does it need to be earlier with winter conditions?

Shin, I'll be in Huntington Harbor (very close to Seal Beach). Maybe we could carpool. Let's PM each other.

Nice. We may be interested. I was just thinking of something to do during the holiday break. Even better . . . Wifey and I will be at in-law's house during week of 12/20. They live in Upland . . . pretty much staring at the base of Baldy.

BUT, neither of us have done Baldy before and I'm a bit of a newbie around the forums here (though not to the outdoors) so excuse the ignorance:

I guess the first stupid question - is this a day hike? Where will you be leaving from, what trail/loop? Sounds like it's snow covered - especially after this weekend, and recent TRs. I know still a few weeks out, but can we assume what the conditions / travel will be like? Gear needed/recommended?

Sorry again for the ignorance and questions, but definitely sounds desirable to do, and to meet alot of ya. And we'll be 15 minutes from the base of baldy already smile

Great blakemiller!

My thoughts are the Ski Hut trail (waiting for Jeff to confirm). Meet at Manker Flats for a 6:00 am start time. This will be a day hike. We can monitor conditions closer to the 23rd but here is a brief TR posted on 12-14-2009 @ 04:55 PM (thanks mark)...

After my summit witch I stayed for 5 minutes 24deg. and windy, I wanted to go down the bowl near the hut, I tryed a couple of places but to icey so I came down the regular way, just making my own trail(lots of fun)..Started at 6:15 summited at 10:10

Hi M.C.
I would like to go with you guys on the 23rd. This will be my first winter trip on Baldy. I have crampons, ice axe, and helmet, etc. I've done Baldy about a dozen times in the summer and would like some winter experience. So, if you don't mind, count me in.
Oh, could someone pick me up at the Ranger Station around 5:30 or whenever if the road is icy? I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Greg Lukenbill

M.C.-I took a couple of pictures today at Manker Flats, if some people are coming up to Baldy on your group hike for the first time, people have made this mistake before if they don't know ,they wait at the Manker Flats sign down the road from the trail head.

First picture "Manker Flats" Sign DON'T WAIT HERE GO 2 tenths OF A MILE UP THE ROAD TO "San Antonio Falls Road" sign..

Shin, Cheryl and I went up to Baldy today, met Wingding and Kevin R from WPSMB on are way down while they were going up, pictures.

wish I was going, have fun wednesday
