I've been home sick all week, so I finally was forced to sit down and put together the "trip report" of my adventure with my Pop from last June. I was reminded of the task in part due both to the upcoming holiday and from Kev-bo's post of "good" days on the mountain. Our "summit" was a few switchers above the cables, turning due to snow and finally exceeding Pop's comfort level. In all, I got to spend a week with my Pop, sharing with him all the gifts that have been given to me over the past years. You'll never convince me that standing atop a summit is of more value than the time I spent with him that week.

He doesn't know it yet, but we'll be going for it again this summer. Preferably under drier conditions. That champagne needs to be opened at 14.5K.

If you've got 15 minutes to kill, enjoy. Now I need to get started on the annual Christmas slide show...

Hi One of those old motorcycle quotes fit "It's not where you go it's what you do when you get there that counts" . Great trips are sometimes very short and you add the length years after with the flash backs. Thank you for letting Jack and I share your trip. Doug

If there was anyone else I would have wanted along on the trip, it would be you, Doug. Thanks for being, well, Dad.

All my love,
L

Well done girl. Best 16 1/2 min. I've spent all day. Could not help but think of the good times spent with my Pop. He's 82, lives in the mountains of NC and still goes snow skiing. Noticed the Michigan shirts early on in the slide show. Whats the connection?

Thank you for sharing . . . and for the reminder that it's the simple things that make life precious.

Laura, thanks for sharing the video. What a great way to spend quality time with your father. You did a great job of capturing the beauty of the outdoors and the special way that you shared it with your father.

Have a merry and safe Christmas.

Mike

Laura, absolutely AWESOME!! Thank you for all the work to put together this film. It brought tears to my eyes and had me laughing as well. I loved all the old "Coleman" camp gear--we had the same stuff. I've shared golden moments of time with my Dad in the wilderness as well--how lucky we are to have dads who didn't create conventional boundaries for their daughters and let us grow to become strong women!! I know he is so proud of you. Thank you SO much for sharing this great adventure. Your pal,

What a wonderful tribute to your Dad and the experiences that brought you to the mountains! I really enjoyed watching it, Laura, it was beautiful! Thanks for posting it.

Thanks, everyone. John, both my parents are UM grads, and my sister and I followed in their footsteps.

The slide show was a lot of fun to put together, and I'm glad everyone is enjoying it. I've got to start thinking about what to cook for Pop next summer... wink

1) Buy a couple of cooked Mooseburgers from Doug Sr.

2) Freeze 1) above before leaving on the climb. Pack them well.

3) Sip a little Champagne and eat thawed Mooseburgers on the summit.

Laura, I sat and watched your video with a tear in my eye and a lot of thoughts from both directions...both as a son and as a father. My own dad passed away between my freshman and sophomore years in college, so he and I never got to share any of my adult adventures. He guided me through my Eagle Scout rank and taught me a lot of what I learned about camping and hiking but we never got up into the mountains together...that was later for me, mostly grad school days and after...

As those on the board who have meandered through my web site know, I started my own son, Nathan, off hiking and camping up in the Sierra by the time he was 5 or 6 and we've never stopped finding chances to do more peaks. He's an Eagle Scout, too, and quite capable of handling himself up in the mountains now, with a couple of 14ers and several other of the higher state highpoints under his boots. He's over in Germany now, spending his junior year abroad studying engineering auf Deutsch which, I'm sure, even with his good background in German, is a bit of a challenge. Hopefully, we'll find a few more chances to put some altitude under us and miles behind us together.

Thanks for sharing...

I am having a problem getting the film to run. The page is blank when I open it, and if I go to the website, that clip is blacked out. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance, really want to check this out.

If Go Bears means Cal Berkeley take it from a Stanford guy, that
is your problem.

If Chicago Bears, take it from a Bronco fan and not a Cutler guy
that too is your problem.

I'm guessing Cal and don't sympathize at all. BUT if you can
finally figure it out, Laura's video is well worth viewing.

Disclosure: My wife too, went to Cal Berkeley but we have
managed to stay together 48 years.

With that said and done, I do hope you have a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year & yes I know who won the Big Game this year
as Cal knocked off the Cardinal

Yes, It is the sturdy Golden Bears of California I refer to. That was a great game this year. I know of several "house divided" (Cal/Stanford) families. Always interesting in November.

GB, let me know if you are still having trouble. Seems to be ok from my end on both the page here and on vimeo. Hmmm...

Hey MT, probably a stupid question, do I have to sign onto that sight to watch your clip?
