I've never seen a trip report for anyone doing a trip from the John Muir Trail starting in Yosemite, bypassing (or bagging) Whitney and continuing on the High Sierra trail to Sequoia. Anyone done it? Seems like you'd get darn near all of the Sierra in those nearly 300 miles.
Anyone done the High Sierra trail from Whitney back to Sequoia?

I'm hoping to do my first JMT trip this summer and figured, why not make it a bit better by adding the HST. Am I missing some logical reason why this wouldn't work?

Thanks
Bryan

I recall a report on this board, a year or two ago, from a guy who did the HST and JMT south to north. He may have thrown in Whitney. There is certainly no reason it would not work the other way. It sounds like a great hike.

There is the resupply issue. The southern half of the JMT is the harder one for resupply, and heading from Wallace Creek to the west adds to that. But one faces that challenge in either direction.

I have done the HST east to west. It's a great hike in either direction.

Bill-e-g on yosemitenews.info has done all that. Look him up on the Yosemite board and I'm sure he'll share info and pictures.

I did the JMT/HST route sometime between 1964 - 1968. I bypassed Whitney; I had hiked the JMT and came out through the Portal after bagging Whitney the year before. I did the JMT/HST as a solo hike without resupply, starting out with a 60# pack. I remember it as being a wonderful trip. By the time I got to Crescent Meadow after 3 weeks on the trail alone I had almost forgotten how to talk. Besides saying that I did it which proves it can be done by someone with no special skills I can't be much help as far as a trip report goes. But thanks for the trigger for remembering it.
