I was wondering if any Sky Pilots had dug out of the snow yet...great photo! They're my all-time favorite wildflower. Hope to see more of them in the switchbacks in about a week & a half.

I'm trying to add captions to my photo album for our early August Upper Kern basin trip. It was almost all above 10,000 ft elevation but there was water everywhere so the wild flowers were out in profusion!

Usually I just describe my flower pictures as things like "a pretty blue flower by a stream", but this time I'd like to try to actually identify them. I've been able to do that for some of these, but I'm no botanist! For example, the first one was very common, and I think it's a lily, but I can't find the identification for it....but I'm sure it is easily known for anyone who knows their high altitude flowers!

I'm going to post quite a few pictures which I figure you won't mind seeing anyway, but if you know what any of these are, I'd love to know also....

#1 This was all over the place at somewhat lower elevations, usually by water. Some kind of lily????

#2 and 3 These were by the Onion Valley Trailhead

#4 In a dry, rocky area heading up towards lake South America - I'd call it a succulent

#5 I saw a picture of these....somewhere, I wish I could remember where! There were on the way down to Lake South America, after the pass.

#6 In the Upper Kern River basin, down by the lakes where we camped.

#7 On the trail heading back from the Upper Kern to Tyndall Creek

#8 This has got to be a daisy, right? Ok, with a pretty butterfly.

#9 On the hot, dry, rocky trail heading from Upper Kern/Lake South America down to Tyndall Creek. Whatever this plant is, it leads a hard life. It looked like it got very little water and had barely any soil...like a high desert plant

#10 and 11 At the top of Shepherd Pass, nestled in a sheltered rock crevices

#12 Below Anvil Camp heading down in a hot dry area

#13 A paper plant? That's what I'd call it anyway....

If you know any of these, please let me know what they are... If you know a good site for IDing them I'd love that also. I found a few sites but not one that clued me in on these flowers well enough....but that's probably due to user lack of knowledge. wink

Websailor, those white papery flowers are Matilija Poppys. One of my favorites, and one of the few I can identify!

Websailor:

1) Jeffrey Shooting Star (Dodecatheon jeffreyi)
2) Deer's tongue (Swertia radiata)
3) Mountain Pride (Penstemon newberryi)
4) Butterballs (Eriogonum ovalifolium)
5) Davidson's Penstemon (Penstemon davidsonii)
6) Rosy Sedum (Sedum rosea)
7) No picture?
8) Wandering Daisy (Erigeron peregrinus)
9) Buckwheat of some sort?
10/11) Alpine pink columbine (Aquilegia formosa)
12) Pennyroyal (Monardella odoratissima) HINT: if you need a pick me up at the end of the day, grab some of the leaves and rub them between your hands. This is a member of the mint family and the smell is amazing! Makes good tea, as well.
13) Prickly poppy (Aregemone munita)

I'd recommend two books: Wildflowers of the Eastern Sierra and adjoining Mojave Desert and Great Basin by Laird Blackwell, and The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada by John Muir Laws for ID purposes. The Blackwell is a good general guide, with the Laws being a bit more extensive but hand-drawn pictures sometimes make the ID a bit more difficult.

I can't believe the continuing colors that are showing at all elevations right now. The combinations are really unique and not often seen between the early and late-season flowers. A few from this past weekend:

Tracie B,
MooseTracks,

THANK YOU!!!!! smile I was scouring the web trying to find these, but for someone who doesn't even know where to begin, it was tough!

You both have some great flower pictures!

Here is the missing #7 - a small typo on my part:

My little point and shoot just has an LCD screen and when it's in the sun, it's almost impossible to see what the picture looks like. frown
