It only costs you if you are chosen. They tear up your check, or don't charge your card, if you are not.

This thread has gotten kind of quiet...

Nothing in my mailbox yet, and no hits on the CC either. smirk

Yesterday I received my permit for 12 for a group of Scouts. We enter and exit Cottonwood as after numerous calls with the permit office we could never get an exit permit at trail crest. A couple extra days and a few extra miles never hurt anyone.

My credit card was charged by Inyo for $30.00 on Saturday . I saw the charges Monday morning. I'm hoping to see the letter this evening or Friday. I basically asked for a 5 day overnight for anything from mid July to early September. As soon as I know the dates I'm hoping to combine it with a stay in Yosemite.
Good luck Dave

P.S.
Steve C usually has the best info on lottery progress. He mentioned on the Whitney Hikers Association board he would try and check for an update on the lottery progress.

Thanks. I'm sure we'll get one of our choices, I left a lot of options. Just nice to know asap so plans can be made. Hopefully this year will be my 7th summit and my wife's 2nd.

Got my letter on Mar. 4th. I have 10 on 8/21. I feel pretty lucky since none of my friends have gotten their letter yet. We all paid by check. I hope someone else gets one cuz I can't fit them all on mine. wink

I stole this from Steve C.'s update on the Whitney Zone board:

Mt. Whitney Lottery Progress Report

As of Thursday, March 25, 2010

We finished the reservation making phase of the lottery this afternoon, now the big box is empty!

Coming to mail boxes soon:
4034 good news letters
2844 no luck this time.

Tomorrow we will all turn to working on the outgoing mail. We expect to send out hundreds of letters in Friday and Saturday's mail. The unsuccessful letters will all be mailed as quick as we can put them into envelopes.
The charge card machine will be running non stop to get the successful letters going out as quickly as possible. It may take another week to get all the letters mailed.

So out of 7,370 applications received, they still have 6878 replies (93%) yet to mail.

And now, if you get your letter sooner rather than later, odds are you get a rejection notice.

I forgot to add my dream is to do a double hike of Whitney in one day. I've done back to back, just never trained for a double.

BTW, is the group holding a group hike day this year? Other than the senior hike? I'm not quite AARP material yet!

My card was charged today for our group of 15 Boy Scouts. Wonder which of the 19 overnight dates they picked?

Add this on to our HST trek and I should get to Whitney twice this year.

Just musing:
Cost for 15 for 1 night on Whitney: $225
Cost for 15 for 7 nights on the HST: $15

Woo-hoo, got my notice today. It was my last choice of dates, June 27. But that gives me a 8-year "winning" streak for permits - sometimes two, usually one. I mailed mine on Feb 27 so it was one of the later applications received.
Yikes, that's coming up fast, I better get in shape!

Just my my confirmation that I received three day permits for August 3. And I just made my reservations for Onion Valley campground. It is interesting as I put down every T-W-Th in August and "any day" in September. Out of seven years applying for the one dayers, I've got permits six of those 7 years. My itinerary will be: arrive Toulumne Meadows July 26. Day hike that day, next day hike Mt.Dana (13,000) at Tioga Pass. Arrive Onion Valley Camp groud July 28-August 1 for day hiking. Aug. 1 day hike White Mountain, Aug. 2 rest day in Lone Pine. Day hike Mt. Whitney August 3, leave for home Aug. 4. (I need the one day permits as I have an artificial knee and do better with less weight on my back.) Best of luck to everyone who hasn't heard about their permits. Bobd

Frequent visitor to the board and the Whitney Portal store whenever I am in the area, but have been denied every year since 2006 (my first and only summit attempt). Just got my approval for my first choice of dates this year- Yay!!! We'll be on the summit at the last weekend in July, bringing up two newcomers as well. Looking forward to an enjoyable trek up the mule trail. Woo hoo!
