The wildflowers are starting in the Alabama Hills now but in several weeks they shoud be in full bloom. I was thiking of a hike and maybe a walk up the Portal road if any one is training for Whitney this summer or before would make it about an easy 18 miles with 3000' gain.

Start at the road closed sign walk to the Portal return to town using the trail in the Hills. Again leave a car /truck at the Arch trailhead saves 5 miles, if anyone wanted to cut distance down or could just do the Portal loop as an option.

Thinking the 27 of March . Thanks Doug (bring guns, ammo, sun block and first aid kits, copy of 2nd correction thing they talk about, water filter and I have a supply of wagbags), should be a fun day for all .

Great idea, hope to make it up there. May have to work that weekend though. Would this be a hike up the road or a combination of road and Thompson trail?

I enjoy Doug's sense of humor. And... his stories. If I can make it out there two weekends in a row, I would love to do another stroll through them hills. As long as someone will watch my back. eek

Whut?

As anyone who knows me from the boards can affirm, I have the worst understanding of American style humor, and even I can tell that Doug was making light of the enormous thread that has grown around the "Guns in National Parks" topic.

Sheesh!

Put me down as a maybe, Doug.

Saw my first wildflower in bloom yesterday while hiking in the El Paso Wilderness - an Indian Paintbrush.

Hi The more hot days ahead the greater the bloom.

Over the years I thought about a hike that would be somewhat like Trailcamp to the summit and out , as most people do the overnight trip . This hike should allow a study of that option, covers the distance and elevation gain that would test the foot gear ,clothing and food choices. Also some snow/ice to deal with and pack size .

The critical thing is it starts one thinking: how easy it can be or how hard you can make it.

Five new trees, five new flowers and five new wildlife sightings and you are on the summit ,or run head down sweating and grunting your way until you are spent.

Thanks Bee and Blooty. Doug

I haven't been reading it (just threw in some off-topic in to an off-topic), so I shouldn't pass judgement, but I think a bunch of people need to find something better to do... like go out a climb some mountains.

BTW, I probably won't be on this one. With wildflowers in view, it would probably take me three days to cover this much ground on my hands and knees, camera in hand...

Laura,

Now that is a picture....it takes my breath away!

With a slight blurring of one's eyes, it could be one of those NASA pictures of deep space.

Doug

Do you have any more details such as a planned start time, and will this be another potluck dinner at the Hostel afterward?

Thanks again for the last one, looking forward to another.

Hi I have checked the Portal and the road so that part of the trip is an option, 2000' gain about 7 miles round trip

Leave the Road closed sign at 6 AM on the 27 March, Hike up to the Portal and return to the road closed sign by 10 AM. We can lave most ofthe morning gear in the cars/trucks

Meet the rest of the group at 10 AM (road closed sign) and take the trail back into town. I will leave a car at the Arch Trail parking area and can plan on snacks lunch in this area . Hike back to town on the trail as before and yes a pot luck as we did last time.

So a quick recap Road closed sign to Portal 7+ miles 2000' gain

Road closed sign to town ,11 Miles (option to do the sub Everest hike after the Arch trail rest stop) with stops along the route to snack and check Flowers . Thanks Doug
